Baseball Set to Play Two Midweek Matchups With Southern Conference Opponents

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team is set to play two midweek matchups versus two Southern Conference opponents this week.

First UNC Asheville will host Wofford at Greenwood Field on Tuesday, April 23. A day later UNC Asheville will travel to Cullowhee, N.C. for a mountain rivalry matchup with Western Carolina on April 24 at 6 p.m.

Chancellor Nancy J. Cable will throw out the first pitch as part of UNC Asheville's Installation week on Tuesday, April 23, at Greenwood Field. The matchup between UNC Asheville and Wofford on Tuesday is scheduled for 6:02 p.m.

Chancellor Cable will throw out the first pitch at approximately 6 p.m.

In addition, UNC Asheville is holding its annual Vs. Cancer Awareness Game on Tuesday, April 23. After the game, UNC Asheville players will shave their heads to raise awareness for the cause. Learn more HERE

About the Bulldogs
The Bulldogs are 13-25 on the 2019 season. They are tied for sixth place in the Big South Conference with an 8-10 conference record and are only two games back of the fifth-place team. The Bulldogs have played well at Greenwood field with nine of their 13 wins coming on their home field.

In UNC Asheville's win over Charleston Southern on April 20, Brandon Lankford hit his team-leading 13th home run of the season. That total is now second best in the Big South Conference and is only one behind the conference leader. The total also puts Lankford among the top 18 NCAA Division I players in the country in that category. Lankford's 13 home runs are a new career high and the total gives the junior 31 career home runs in his three seasons in a Bulldog uniform.

UNC Asheville tacked on 11 runs in its rout of Charleston Southern on Saturday. Three Bulldogs had multi-hit games while four Bulldogs finished with two or more RBIs. Greg Gasparro continued to be a catalyst from the leadoff spot. The junior reached base a total of four times and scored two runs. The left-handed hitting outfielder/pitcher is hitting .351 in his 97 at-bats this season. Jake Madole put UNC Asheville on the board with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first. That homer was his fifth of the year and the redshirt junior finished the game with three hits and three RBIs. Danny Wilson and Joe Gruszka also has multi-RBI games in the win over Charleston Southern.

On the hill, Gasparro threw a gem in game one of the series versus Charleston Southern. The left-handed hurler threw five innings of four hit ball and allowed only one run in the process. Blake Brown made two appearances out of the bullpen in the weekend series. The right-hander allowed two unearned runs without giving up a hit in his four innings of work.

In his last start versus Furman, Danny Wilson threw a season high 4.1 innings. The senior allowed three runs and punched out five.

About the Terriers
Wofford is 24-17 on the 2019 season. The Terriers are currently tied for second place in the Southern Conference with a 7-4 conference record.

As a team, the Terriers are hitting .300 with 299 runs scored this season. The Terriers are led by Lawson Hill who is hitting .381 and has started all 41 games for Wofford this season. Hill also leads the team with 31 RBIs. John Dempsey leads the team with six home runs and 82 total bases. Dempsey is one of six Terriers that are currently hitting over the .300 mark on the season. Mike Brown is hitting .325 and has stolen 30 bases in 31 attempts.

As a staff, the Terriers have pitched to a 3.91 ERA and have allowed 158 earned runs. Austin Higginbotham leads the Terriers with 68.1 innings pitched. The senior left-hander has an 8-2 record and a 3.29 ERA. Hayes Heinecke has started nine games and has a 7-0 record. The freshman lefty has a 2.39 ERA in 52.2 innings. Rasesh Pandya has made 15 appearances out of the bullpen and pitched to a 1.25 ERA in 21.2 innings.

About the Catamounts
Western Carolina is 17-18 overall on the 2019 season. The Catamounts are currently seventh in the Southern Conference with a 6-9 record.

The Catamounts have four players that are hitting over the .300 mark. They are led by Justice Bigbie with a .387 batting average. Bigbie has started all 35 games for the Catamounts and leads the team in home runs (10) and RBIs (41). Matthew Koehler is hitting .377 on the season and has nine home runs and 34 RBIs. Daylan Nanny has been a doubles machine so far in the 2019 season. The sophomore outfielder has hit 14 on the season to go with a .310 batting average.

On the mound, Chase Walter has thrown 59 innings in 14 appearances and made six starts along the way. The right-handed hurler has a 4-4 record and a 4.73 ERA. Taylor Purus has thrown in 58.1 innings in 11 games and eight starts. The lefty has a 3-3 record and a 5.55 ERA. Zach Franklin has thrown 36 innings in one start and six appearances out of the pen while pitching to a 4.00 ERA.
