UNC Asheville Closes Out Series With Charleston Southern With Dominating Win

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville baseball closed out its Big South series with Charleston Southern with a dominant 11-4 victory over the Buccaneers on Saturday, April 20, at Greenwood Field.
UNC Asheville (13-25, 8-10 Big South) opened the game strongly in the bottom of the first inning with Jake Madole giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead via a two-run home run. The home run was the fifth of the year for Madole.
The Bulldogs added another in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0 lead over Charleston Southern (16-27, 6-12 Big South). The Buccaneers would plate two in the top of the third to cut the Bulldog advantage to 3-2, but UNC Asheville doubled up its lead with another run in the bottom of the third inning.
The Bulldogs would go ahead 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning with Brandon Lankford blasting his Big South-leading 13th home run of the season. The two-run blast with two outs scored Madole, who had doubled to left-center field to get on base.
UNC Asheville would extend its lead to 10-2 in the bottom of the seventh with four more runs before adding another to make it 11-2 in favor of the Bulldogs.
Charleston Southern would get two runs back in the top of the ninth to set the final score at 11-4.
Madole finished a triple away from the cycle in the win over Charleston Southern. He homered in the first, singled in the third inning and doubled in the fifth inning. Madole was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs.
Greg Gasparro and Lankford both had two hits for the Bulldogs in the game. Gasparro was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Lankford was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
The Bulldogs out-hit Charleston Southern, 11-9, in the game overall. Three different players for Charleston Southern had two hits.
UNC Asheville reliever Austin Fahr (1-0) picked up his first victory on the season in relief of starter Jacob Edwards, who pitched the first three innings and fanned five.
Fahr was fantastic in his 1.1 innings on the hill. He came into a situation where the bases were loaded in the top of the fourth with no outs for Charleston Southern. He was able to get the Bulldogs out of the jam without giving up a run.
In total, five different Bulldogs were used on the mound in the win. Bulldog reliever Eric Whitecavage made his 97th appearance in the game to tie Nick Shavone (2011-15) for the most appearances in UNC Asheville baseball history.
Charleston Southern starter Cody Maw (2-4) suffered the loss. He pitched the first five innings and allowed seven hits and five earned runs.
The Bulldogs will next host Southern Conference member Wofford for a midweek matchup at Greenwood Field on Tuesday, April 23. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
UNC Asheville Chancellor Nancy J. Cable will throw out the first pitch on Tuesday. In addition, the contest will be UNC Asheville's annual Vs. Cancer Awareness Game.
