Baseball to Host Furman at Greenwood Field on Tuesday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team is set to play a midweek matchup with Southern Conference member Furman on Tuesday, April 16 at Greenwood Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Last Matchup
Tuesday's matchup will be the second time the Bulldogs and Paladins have faced off this season. The Bulldogs grabbed the 4-3 victory over Furman on Feb. 27 at Latham Stadium in Greenville, S.C.

Brandon Lankford and Danny Wilson both homered in the win over Furman. Greg Gasparro started the game and threw two innings while giving up one run. Jacob Edwards secured the win with three shutout innings where the freshman surrendered only three hits. Kole Harris nailed down the save by throwing a scoreless ninth inning and striking out two.

Highlights from This Past Weekend

About the Bulldogs
The Bulldogs are 12-22 overall on the 2019 season. UNC Asheville is currently tied for sixth place in the Big South Conference standings with a 7-8 record. The Bulldogs are 8-5 in games played at Greenwood Field.

In UNC Asheville's weekend series versus Winthrop, third baseman Brandon Lankford hit his Big South Conference leading 11th and 12th home runs of the season. The total is a new career high and the junior is now tied for 12th place in all of NCAA Division I baseball in home runs. Lankford's previous season high was 10 which was set in his freshman season.

Greg Gasparro ended up with four hits in eight at-bats in the series versus Winthrop. He also had one RBI and scored four runs out of the lead-off spot. Danny Wilson put up four hits and five RBIs, while Dominic Freeberger reached base three times and touched home three times.

UNC Asheville put 12 runs on the board in Friday night's victory over Winthrop. All nine Bulldogs that started the game ended the game with one hit or more and seven of the nine touched home at least once.

On the mound, Jordan Carr pitched a gem in the Bulldogs victory on Friday. The left-handed hurler surrendered only two runs and picked up his third win of the season. Carr pitched 5.2 innings while striking out five. Blake Brown worked 3.1 innings out of the pen. The junior struck out seven of the 13 batters he faced and allowed only three baserunners en route to his first save of the 2019 season.

In Saturday's doubleheader versus Winthrop, Austin Fahr threw 4.1 innings out of the bullpen in game 1. Fahr allowed no runs on six hits. In game 2, Jacob Edwards threw a career high seven innings. The freshman left-hander allowed two earned runs on five hits while striking out six.

About the Paladins
The Paladins are 12-23 on the season and are 5-7 in the Southern Conference. Furman is 4-13 on the road this season.

The Paladins are led by Jabari Richards with a .410 batting average. The senior has only started 18 games, but he leads the team with 67 total bases. He is also second in home runs and runs scored, with 7 and 23 respectively. John Michael Boswell has started 32 games for the Paladins and has a .323 average and a team leading 41 hits and 30 RBIs. Sterling Turmon is also hitting .323 and has a team leading nine home runs on the 2019 season. Altogether the Paladins are hitting .262 and have scored 206 runs on the 2019 season. There are five Paladins hitting over the .285 mark on the season.   

On the mound, John Michael Bertrand has made seven starts in nine appearances and has pitched to a 2-2 record. The redshirt sophomore has thrown 48.1 innings with a 3.72 ERA. Eric Taylor has thrown 21 innings out of the pen with 18 strikeouts and a 2.14 ERA. As a pitching staff, the Paladins have a 5.85 ERA and have allowed 201 earned runs on the 2019 season.
