UNC Asheville Men’s and Women’s Tennis Sweeps Big South Weekly Freshman Awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – UNC Asheville men's and women's tennis swept the weekly Big South Freshman awards.

The official announcement was made by the league office on Wednesday, April 10, 2019.

Lize Alet Morkel of UNC Asheville women's tennis was chosen Big South Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week, while Leo Bierbaum was tabbed Big South Men's Tennis Freshman of the Week.

Morkel has now received weekly honors from the Big South four times in her career. She has twice been named Big South Women's Tennis Player of the Week (Jan. 23 and March 20) and twice been named Big South Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week (Feb. 6 and April 10).

Bierbaum has now been tabbed Big South Men's Tennis Freshman of the Week twice in the last three weeks (March 27 and April 10).

A mid-year enrollee, Morkel went a perfect 2-0 in singles and doubles last week. In singles, Morkel opened her week by besting Presbyterian College No. 1 Sydney Patton 3-6, 6-3, 7-6. She followed that up with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Hampton No. 1 Yulia Kapitanova. In doubles, along with doubles partner Lauren Watson-Steele, she picked up two wins at No. 2 doubles.

At Presbyterian the duo bested Samantha Calais and Jessica Leeman 6-2 before ending the week by downing Hampton's Viktoria Ljungman and Kapitanova, 6-2.

On the year, Morkel has a league second-best 12 wins at No. 1 singles. She has 11 overall wins in doubles.  

Bierbaum went a perfect 2-0 last week in singles. In UNC Asheville's win over Presbyterian College, Bierbaum bested Alberto Conde 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. He followed that up with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Charles Hudson of Hampton. 

Though it did not count in this week's Big South weekly awards, Bierbaum also won yesterday at Gardner-Webb by downing Johan Fors 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 5 singles.

Bierbaum now has an impressive 14 wins during his freshman campaign.
