Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. – UNC Asheville men's tennis dropped their first match of the season in a road match versus College of Charleston on Saturday by a score of 4-3.

The Bulldogs are now 10-1 on the season.

"I was pleased with the way we competed today," UNC Asheville men's tennis head coach Tom Hand said. "Charleston played some really good tennis all the way down the lineup and we were not quite able to overcome it. This will be a great learning experience for us, particularly for our younger guys."

UNC Asheville took the early 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point. UNC Asheville's Henry Patten and Olly Cull picked up the win at No. 1 doubles before Charlie Morkel and Quinn Fender won 7-6 at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point. The match at No. 2 was left unfinished.

The match at No. 1 singles would be a battle of the undefeated between UNC Asheville's Patten and College of Charleston's Benedikt Henning. Henning would get the victory to hand Patten his only loss of the season and tie things up at 1-1 for the Cougars.

The Bulldogs would bounce back with wins from Leo Bierbaum at No. 6 and Nolan at No. 2 to give UNC Asheville the 3-1 lead. The Cougars would win the match at No. 5 to make the score 3-2 and to stay within reach of the victory.

Morkel at No. 3 and Sirawit Daosaengsawang at No. 4 would each drop their first set 7-6 in their quest to clinch the win for the Bulldogs. Morkel fought back and swept the second set 6-0 to force a set three. Daosaengsawang was right on his heels with a 6-3 win in set two to force his own third set.

The Cougars wouldn't go away as they would claim the third set at No. 4 and No. 5 to pick up the 4-3 victory and hand the Bulldogs their first loss of the season.

Next, the Bulldogs will travel to the Sunshine State for a spring break road trip that will feature four matches in five days. The Bulldogs will kick off the trip on Monday, March 11 versus FAU at 12 p.m. The trip will continue with Stetson on Tuesday, FGCU on Wednesday and Boston University on Friday in Boca Raton.
