Bulldogs Drop Match to FAU Monday
03.11.2019 | Men's Tennis
BOCA RATON, Fla. – UNC Asheville men's tennis dropped a match to Florida Atlantic, 4-0, on Monday afternoon.
UNC Asheville is now 10-2 on the season.
"I'm really proud of the way the guys competed today." UNC Asheville men's tennis head coach Tom Hand said. "That is the best team we have seen this year and we made them work for every point."
In doubles, the Owls took the early advantage with a win at No. 1. Jason Legall and Ignacio Garcia defeated the duo of Henry Patten and Olly Cull, 6-4, but the Bulldogs were not going to go down easily. Oli Nolan and Sirawit Daosaengsawang picked up the 6-3 win at No. 2 to tie things up for the Bulldogs.
The match at No. 3 would be a dogfight all the way to the end between Charlie Morkel and Quinn Fender of UNC Asheville and Kirac Bekisoglu and Thomas Guy of Florida Atlantic. Neither duo would go up by more than one at any point during the match. After 12 games, the duos would be locked in a 6-6 tie. Ultimately, it would be Bekisoglu and Guy of FAU that would get the 7-6 victory to give the Owls a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Owls would jump out to an early lead in singles with first set wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3. The Bulldogs, finding themselves in an uphill battle, gained momentum with a first set win from Daosaengsawang at No. 4 along with a tough fight from Cull at No. 5 that ultimately ended in a 7-5 loss in the first set.
The early momentum picked up by FAU proved to be too much for the Bulldogs to overcome as the Owls took the matches at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 to clinch the 4-0 victory. The matches at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 were left unfinished.
The Bulldogs will have a quick turnaround as they are set to travel to DeLand, Fla. on Tuesday, March 12, to face Stetson at 5 p.m. Stetson is 8-6 on the season and is 4-1 on their home court. Stetson and the Bulldogs have had two common opponents this season with both teams defeating ECU and Appalachian State.
