Deery and Hinson Lead UNC Asheville in Opening Round of French Broad Collegiate Invitational

ARDEN, N.C.Adelyn Deery and Taylor Hinson each led the UNC Asheville women's golf team, as the two Bulldogs are inside the top 12 to open the first-ever French Broad Collegiate Invitational on Monday at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove.

First Round Highlights
 
Deery has the highest individual placement for the Bulldogs after 18 holes of play, as the junior is in a three-way tie for ninth. The Lancaster, Pa. native opened the two-day tournament with a 4-over 75 round. She played level throughout the round, as she carded 12 pars to go along with one birdie. Deery is only two strokes from moving into the top 4 and five strokes away from the individual leader.
 
Hinson is in a four-way tie for 12th, as the sophomore opened the outing with a 5-over 76 round. Like Deery, Hinson was consistent for most of the day, as the Belmont, N.C. native inked 11 pars to go along with one birdie.
 
Junior Kellen Alsip was only one stroke behind Hinson, as she posted a 6-over 77 round on Monday. She was the lone Bulldog to card multiple birdies, as she sank birdies on holes six and 14. On the front nine, Alsip etched a 2-over 38.
 
Playing as an individual, Janie Thomas had the fourth-best round for Asheville with a 9-over 80 score.
 
Freshman Baylee Evans and junior Linna Brooks rounded out the results for the Bulldogs, as they both finished the opening round at tied for 38th.
 
As a team, UNC Asheville is in a three-way tie for fourth. The Bulldogs are tied with fellow Big South Conference members USC Upstate and Presbyterian. UNC Asheville carded a 26-over 310 to open the two-round tournament, and it is only two strokes from tying Appalachian State and six strokes from team-leading Wofford.
 
The Terriers hold the team lead at 18-over 302, and the Mountaineers are four strokes back at 22-over 306.
 
Blanca Porta of USC Beaufort sits atop of the individual leaderboard, as she is the only player with a sub-par score (1-under 70). Becca Earl of Wofford and Maiken Bing Paulsen of Presbyterian are tied for second at 1-over 72.
 
What's Next?
 
The final 18 holes of the French Broad Collegiate Invitational will be a shotgun start at 10 a.m. The Bulldogs will tee off from holes 5-9 and will be paired with USC Upstate and Presbyterian.
