Bulldogs Remain Perfect in League Play With Thrilling 4-3 Victory at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – UNC Asheville men's tennis closed out its Big South Conference-opening weekend with a thrilling road win over Winthrop on Sunday, March 24, 2019.
The UNC Asheville (15-2, 2-0 Big South) win over Winthrop (7-8, 2-2 Big South) allowed the Bulldogs to open conference play a perfect 2-0. The Bulldogs had opened conference play one day earlier by securing a 6-1 win over Radford at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown.
The win over Winthrop started with UNC Asheville collecting the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. At No. 1 doubles, UNC Asheville's Henry Patten and Olly Cull garnered a 6-3 win over Gabriel Dias and Aditya Gokhale. UNC Asheville's Sirawit Daosaengsawang and Oli Nolan earned a hard-fought 7-6 win at No. 2 doubles to secure the doubles point.
In singles, the Bulldogs won at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 singles to earn the 4-3 overall victory.
Patten secured UNC Asheville's first singles win of the day with a 6-0, 6-7, 6-3 win over Diego Quiroz at No. 1 singles.
Charlie Morkel bested Winthrop's Alberto Tingali 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 at No. 4 singles and Asheville's Leo Bierbaum picked up a 7-6, 7-6 win over Winthrop's Lluis Miralles at No. 6 singles.
UNC Asheville will next return home to host USC Upstate on Wednesday, March 27, at 3 p.m. at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown.
