UNC Asheville Leads Pack After Opening Round of Pinehurst Women’s Intercollegiate

PINEHURST, N.C. –  To open the Pinehurst Women's Intercollegiate, the UNC Asheville women's golf team leads the pack, as the Bulldogs opened the three-day tournament with a 33-over 321 on Wednesday.
 
Asheville has three players in the top 10 individually, including two tied for fourth.

First Round Highlights
 
As a team, UNC Asheville leads the six-team field, which includes St. Johns's, Boston University, Yale, Dayton and Southern New Hampshire. The Bulldogs opened the three-round tournament with a 33-over 321. Asheville holds a narrow two-stroke lead on the Red Storm, and the top five teams are within 11 strokes of each other.
 
Baylee Evans and Kellen Alsip lead the UNC Asheville golfers, as they are both tied for fourth in the 41-person field. The Bulldog duo are in a three-way tie with St. John's Kaitleen Shee. The Bulldogs both carded a 7-over 77 to lead the squad. Evans played fairly even on the back nine, as she posted a 2-over 38 on the final nine holes. Alsip started out hot by sinking five straight pars. The junior finished her day with 11 pars overall.
 
Adelyn Deery was the third Bulldog in the top 10 individually, as she opened the tournament in sole possession of seventh place. The junior posted an 8-over 80. Overall, she sank a pair of birdies, which was tied for the team lead on Wednesday.
 
Sophomore Taylor Hinson had the fourth-best score at 11-over 83. She also carded two birdies, which came in a three-hole span. She is currently tied for 14th.
 
Linna Brooks and Janie Thomas also competed on the opening day, and they sit tied for 19th and tied for 25th, respectively.  
 
Ami Gianchandani of Yale holds a four-stroke lead on the individual leaderboard, as she posted a 1-over 73 on Wednesday.
 
What's Next?
 
UNC Asheville will play its second round of the Pinehurst Women's Intercollegiate on Thursday morning, and the Bulldogs will be paired with St. John's and Boston University. Brooks will start the second round for Asheville on hole one at 8:50 a.m.
