Women’s Golf Improves Four Spots at 2019 Kiawah Island Spring Classic

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The UNC Asheville women's golf team made a four-spot improvement on Monday, as the Bulldogs carded their second straight 16-over 307 round to move into a tie for 23rd at the country's largest tournament – the 2019 Kiawah Island Spring Classic.

Second Round Highlights
Highlighting the second round for UNC Asheville was the Bulldogs improving four spots as a team. Asheville was tied for 27th after Sunday, and now after 36 holes of action, UNC Asheville is now tied for 23rd with Navy and Quinnipiac. The Bulldogs posted the same score as Sunday, as they combined for a 16-over 307 score in the second round. The Bulldogs are now ahead of Big South Conference members Charleston Southern, Presbyterian, Longwood and Hampton.
Leading UNC Asheville individually was sophomore Taylor Hinson. The Belmont, N.C. native opened the tournament on Sunday with a 2-over 74, and she matched that score on Monday at the Osprey Point Golf Course. Hinson opened her front nine (holes 10-18) with a 2-over 38, but on her back nine (holes 1-9), she carded an even-par 36. After two rounds of play, Hinson is tied for 39th out of 254 golfers with a 4-over 148.
Kellen Alsip made a big improvement from the first to second round, as the junior improved by four strokes. The Cincinnati, Ohio native opened the three-day tournament with an 8-over 80 but carded a 4-over 76 on Monday. In the second round, she sank 13 pars and even one birdie on the par 5, 490-yard hole eight at the Osprey Point Golf Course.
Freshman Baylee Evans had the third-lowest score for UNC Asheville with a 6-over 78. She posted a team-best two birdies on Monday.
Adelyn Deery and Linna Brooks rounded out the scores for Asheville on Monday with a 7-over 79 and a 10-over 82, respectively.
ASUN member North Florida now holds a commanding four-stroke lead on Coastal Carolina. UNF posted a team-best 4-under 284 round on Tuesday, while Coastal Carolina finished the day with a 7-over 295.
Remya Meenakshisundaram of South Florida and Amy Wooten of Western Carolina are tied for first place at 5-under 139. Sydney Shrader of North Florida is one stroke away from moving into first place.

UNC Asheville will tee off the final 18 holes on Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. at the Osprey Point Golf Course. Asheville will play on holes 15A-17B, and it will be paired with Tennessee Tech, Navy and Quinnipiac.
