Evans, Hinson Lead UNC Asheville After First Round of Kiawah Island Spring Classic

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Freshman Baylee Evans and sophomore Taylor Hinson led the UNC Asheville women's golf team on Sunday, as the duo each shot a 2-over 74 at the Oak Point Golf Course to open the 2019 Kiawah Island Spring Classic.

First Round Highlights

Both Evans and Hinson opened the first tournament of the spring with 2-over 74 rounds at the Oak Point Golf Course. Hinson was consistent, as the sophomore sank 14 pars. The Belmont, N.C. native also carded a birdie on the par-4, 422-yard hole four. Evans totaled 13 pars in the opening round, and highlighting her round was inking two birdies on holes four and 11.

The two Bulldogs are currently tied for 54th in the 254-person field. They are also just two strokes away from jumping in the top 17.

Adelyn Deery had the third-best round, as she posted a 7-over 79 outing. On the back nine, Deery carded a 2-over 38, including sinking back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18. She is currently tied for 139th.

Kellen Alsip and Linna Brooks rounded out the finishes for UNC Asheville. Alsip shot an 8-over 80, while Brooks finished with a 10-over 82 outing.

As a team, UNC Asheville is in 27th with a 17-over 307 opening round. The Bulldogs are only one stroke away from matching Big South rival Charleston Southern and only six strokes away from first-year Big South Conference member USC Upstate.

Coastal Carolina leads the 49-team field with a 2-under 286. Three Chanticleers are in the top 17 as an individual, while all five golfers are in the top 73.

Lehigh golfer Reagan Jahn stands atop of the individual leaderboard. The Mountain Hawk opened the three-day tournament with a 4-under 68 outing. There is a three-way tie for second - High Point's Sarah Kahn, Western Carolina's Amy Wooten and Stetson's Justine Lauer.

What's Next?

Day two of the three-day 2019 Kiawah Island Spring classic is set for Monday, Feb. 25. UNC Asheville will play on the Osprey Point Golf Course and will tee off at 8:30 a.m. The Bulldogs will be paired with Monmouth.
