Dominating Second Half Allows Bulldogs to Pick Up League Road Win at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – A dominating second half allowed UNC Asheville women's basketball to secure a huge 55-43 Big South Conference road win over Winthrop on Saturday, Feb. 16, at Winthrop Coliseum.

Game Highlights
The Bulldogs (13-11, 8-5 Big South) opened the game by quickly scoring the first four points, but Winthrop (10-14, 6-7 Big South) would match the 4-0 run with one of their own to tie things up at 4-all with under eight minutes left in the first quarter.
A 6-2 run shortly thereafter by the Eagles allowed Winthrop to take a 10-6 lead. The Eagles would go on to lead by as many as five at 16-11 with just under two minutes left in the opening quarter.
The Bulldogs would close the first quarter on a 6-0 run behind back-to-back three-pointers by Jessica Wall to own a 17-16 lead at the quarter break.
UNC Asheville shot an impressive 58.3 percent (7-of-12) as a team in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs would go on to lead 23-19 after a layup by Ali Trani, but the Eagles would score the next five to own a 24-23 lead with 5:50 remaining in the second quarter.
The two teams would play back and forth over the next few minutes with neither really able to find any separation, but the Eagles would go on to take a narrow 29-27 lead into intermission.
The Bulldogs closed out the first half shooting 47.8 percent (11-of-23) as a team. Wall led the Bulldogs in the first half with eight points, while Juliet Esadah had six points.
The game would be tied at 33-33 with a little under six minutes to play in the third quarter, but an 8-0 run by UNC Asheville allowed the Bulldogs to take a 41-33 lead with 2:37 left in the quarter. During the run, UNC Asheville held the Eagles scoreless for almost four minutes.
The Bulldogs would go on to hold the Eagles without a field goal for almost five minutes in the third quarter. UNC Asheville in total would outscore Winthrop, 15-7, in the third quarter to take a 42-36 lead into the fourth quarter.
UNC Asheville would outscore Winthrop, 13-7, in the fourth and final quarter to collect the 12-point win and the season sweep of the Eagles.
Overall in the second half, UNC Asheville outscored the Eagles, 28-14.
UNC Asheville closed out the game shooting 39.1 percent (18-of-46) as a team, while the stout Bulldog defense limited Winthrop to just 27.4 percent (17-of-62) shooting. The Bulldogs were strong at the free throw line, shooting 75 percent (15-of-20).
Two Bulldogs finished in double figures with Nadiria Evans scoring a game-best 17 points. She did the majority of her damage at the charity stripe where she was 9-of-12. Wall ended her efforts with 11 points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Anika Riley and Courtney Hagaman both led Winthrop in its loss with 12 points.
What's Next
UNC Asheville will conclude a two-game road swing with a trip to Longwood on Tuesday, Feb. 19. The Bulldogs downed the Lancers earlier this season in Kimmel Arena, 80-55.
