UNC Asheville Partners with Boys & Girls Club for Shop with the Dogs
12.03.2019 | Men's Basketball
ASHEVILLE – For the second straight year, UNC Asheville men's basketball team will partner with The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Buncombe County to host Shop with the Dogs, Monday, December 9.
This event will be held at Target, 115 River Hills Road, and give 40 BGC youth the opportunity to provide Christmas gifts for themselves and their families this year. Putting on this event each year is a priority for head coach Mike Morrell.
"As a kid who grew up in the Boys & Girls Club, our Shop with the Dogs event is my favorite event of the year," Morrell said. "The best part of the evening is watching our players interact and spend time with the kids from the Club. It is also a special event for our players because a number of them grew up in and around the Boys & Girls Club as well."
The evening will begin with dinner for the youth and players and each child will then be paired with a UNC Asheville student-athlete. Each child will be given a $100 gift card to spend on themselves and their families while they mix and mingle with players and coaches.
"The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Buncombe County is thrilled to be partnering with UNC Asheville Men's Basketball," said Erin Wilson, Director of Development & Communications for The Salvation Army of Asheville & Buncombe County. "Coach Mike is a huge supporter of our Club and we are so thankful for this event. Every day we try to teach our youth to reach for the stars and instill values that this event reiterates and highlights. Pairing our kids with these players allows them to dream, to imagine a life outside their own and to be mentored by student-athletes."
