RADFORD, Va. – UNC Asheville's women's soccer team fell just short of upsetting Radford Saturday evening at Kupp Stadium in Radford, Va. The Bulldogs held Radford to only one goal in the match but unfortunately couldn't ripple the net themselves as they fell to the Highlanders 1-0.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half of the match as the Bulldogs and the Highlanders took a 0-0 draw into the half.
The Bulldogs took four shots in the first half with two being on goal, both were saved by the Radford goalkeeper. The Bulldog defense held the Radford offense in check as they were kept without a shot on goal in the first 45 minutes of the match.
Radford's offense took a much more aggressive approach coming out of the half as they scored in the 47th minute to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead. In total, Radford took seven shots in the second half.
Maya Gutman took the Bulldogs first shot of the second half that missed just high in the 56th minute as UNC Asheville looked to even the score. Radford's defense held the Bulldogs without another shot in the half until the 89th minute when Olivia Lenderman made a last ditch effort to even the score with a shot on goal that was saved by the Highlander goalkeeper to preserve Radford's 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs held Radford to only five shots on goal in the match with goalkeeper Bryson Lee picking up four saves.
The Bulldogs will return to the pitch, Wednesday, October 9, as they take on Hampton in a 3 p.m. matchup in Hampton, Va.
