Bulldogs Drop Road Match at Gardner-Webb
10.26.2019 | Men's Soccer
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – UNC Asheville's men's soccer team fell in a road Big South Conference contest at Gardner-Webb, 5-0, Saturday evening.
Things got off to a rocky start for the Bulldogs (3-10-1, 2-4 Big South), as Gardner-Webb (7-7-1, 4-2 Big South) took the lead in the fourth minute on a goal from Henrik Kortgodde. Two minutes later, the Runnin' Bulldogs doubled the lead on a penalty kick from Oskar Wang.
Gardner-Webb would tack on a third goal with a little more than a minute remaining in the first half to take a 3-0 lead into the locker room.
Ben Katt had the first shot opportunity for the Bulldogs in the 13th minute, but his shot was blocked, while Taylor Durall's shot in the 30th minute sailed wide left.
Izaiah Vignali had a shot attempt in the 75th minute that was blocked, marking the only shot attempt for the Bulldogs in the second half. Gardner-Webb added on two more goals in the second half to make the final margin.
"I thought Gardner-Webb was really good," head coach Mathes Mennell said. "It was a typical match in the Big South Conference title race. (Garnder-Webb) was completely up for it. I thought their ability to pass the ball caused us problems. They were completely up for it in all areas of the game: their ability to work hard, run, tackle.
"In the second half, I thought we started off with some resistance, but we're going to need to take a long, hard look in the mirror at ourselves with the way we're starting matches. That being said, there's a lot to play for, we still control our destiny as far as what we want to play for this season, and we're on to Xavier."
The Bulldogs are set to return to action, Tuesday, when they travel to Xavier for their final nonconference matchup of the regular season.
