ASHEVILLE, N.C. – It's one of the most important events on the calendar each and every year for UNC Asheville athletics.

This year's "Our Turn to Play Scholarship Luncheon" presented by Wells Fargo will be held on Wednesday, May 1, 2019, from 11:45 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on the Kimmel Arena floor inside the Wilma M. Sherrill Center.

The keynote speaker for this year's event is also none other than broadcasting legend Lesley Visser, who was the first person to be recognized by the Pro Football Hall of Fame as the 2006 recipient of the Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award, which recognizes long-time exceptional contributions to radio and television in professional football.

Visser, who was voted the No.1 Female Sportscaster of all-time in a poll taken by the American Sportscasters Association, currently works for CBS Sports. She was elected to the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame in 2015.

Visser is also the only sportscaster in history (male or female) who has worked on Final Four, NBA Finals, World Series, Triple Crown, Monday Night Football, the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the World Figure Skating Championships and U.S. Open (tennis) network broadcasts.

UNC Asheville Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone is thrilled that Visser is going to be a part of this year's "Our Turn to Play Scholarship Luncheon" presented by Wells Fargo.

"Our Athletics Departmental strategic plan 'Believe. Achieve. Thrive.' is our road map that outlines key areas of focus and growth in developing lifetime leaders from the most valuable resource that we have in our student-athletes," Cone said. "Lesley Visser, a Hall of Famer, has definitely followed this same type of road map and proven that you can thrive in all areas. I cannot think of a better keynote speaker to relay to our female student-athletes and community friends what it takes to win in the classroom, in competition and in the community."

The "Our Turn to Play Scholarship Luncheon" presented by Wells Fargo is an annual event that helps recognize women that are true champions and leaders and helps raise scholarship funds for UNC Asheville women student-athletes.

The event recognizes the many successes of women in athletics and encourages all to support gender equity.

Cone knows just how important the "Our Turn to Play Scholarship Luncheon" presented by Wells Fargo is every year.

"The annual 'Our Turn to Play Scholarship Luncheon' supporting women's athletic scholarships is truly one of our most important events of the year," Cone said. "This fundraising event is key to the success of our women's athletics programs, and just like every year we have already been overwhelmed by the amount of individuals who want to help support this endeavor. There is space still available, and we hope more can join us for what promises to be a special event."
