UNC Asheville Recognizes Nine Seniors in Packed Justice Center Pool

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – In front of a packed crowd in the Justice Center Pool, the UNC Asheville swimming & diving team recognized nine graduating seniors in the final home dual meet of the regular season against conference foe Liberty.

The Bulldogs narrowly dropped the dual meet, as they fell by seven points to the Flames – 136-129.

Highlights

The dual meet versus Liberty started on Friday at the Jewish Community Center, and the Bulldogs swept the program's historic inaugural home 1m diving event. Overall the Bulldogs took 16 team points heading into Saturday's portion of the meet. Freshman diver Kerigan Martin claimed the top spot with 141.53 points. Sophomore Megan Almond followed with 128.55, and Veronica Judson finished third with 108.30 points.

Saturday's portion of the meet started with the 200 medley relay. Emma Nelson, Morgan Rulevich, Madison Rogan and Adee Weller paced UNC Asheville with a third-place finish. The foursome clocked a 1:49.73 time. Freshmen Anna Nabors, Lily Sullivan, Alexis Baker and Mackenzie Humphrey swam a 1:54.13.

In the longest event of the dual meet (1000 freestyle), Skylar Rogan blew the competition away. The junior swam a 10:32.51 and bested the runner-up by over 16 seconds. Senior Sydney VandenBerg placed fourth with an 11:18.48 in the same event.

UNC Asheville's Weller gave the Bulldogs their second straight victory, as the junior won the 200 freestyle. She posted a 1:55.48 time and earned nine team points. Madison Rogan finished third with a 1:56.91.

Seniors Emma Nelson and Katie Brown competed in the 100 backstroke. Nelson finished fourth, while Brown placed fifth. Three Liberty swimmers along with senior Haley Bennison raced exhibition.

Senior Morgan Rulevich earned second-place honors in the 100 breaststroke. She posted a 1:05.66 mark and was under one second away from matching the winner. Rookies Sullivan and Humphrey finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

Three Bulldogs finished 2-3-4 in the 200 butterfly. Catherine Allen paced UNC Asheville in the event, as the junior finished third with a 2:06.96. Nabors posted a 2:12.29, while Aleta Jewell earned a 2:16.69.

One event later, Rulevich earned second-place points in the 50 freestyle. The Lake Wylie, S.C. native swam a 24.49. Freshman Hannah Bruno clocked a 25.76 and fifth-place honors. Both teams had three swimmers each race exhibition.

Skylar Rogan paced the Bulldogs in the 100 freestyle. The Athens, Ga. native swam a 54.01 and earned four team points.

Seniors Nelson and Bennison both raced in the 200 backstroke. Nelson finished fourth with a 2:16.33, while Bennison swam a 2:25.38.

Rulevich earned another medal, as the senior finished third in the 200 breaststroke. She clocked a 2:23.52 and placed third overall.

UNC Asheville got back in the win column on another distance event – 500 freestyle. Weller had a two-and-a-half second advantage on the second-place finisher. The junior swam a 5:12.01 and earned nine points. Jewell also earned team points, as she posted a 5:30.50. Liberty had two swimmers swim exhibition, while UNC Asheville had one.

All four of Liberty's swimmers swam exhibition in the 100 butterfly, which allowed UNC Asheville to claim 13 team points. Madison Rogan, who had the second-fastest overall time, posted a 57.92. Allen finished second with a 1:00.59, and seniors Bennison and Madison-Grace Bristow also had strong showings.

Immediately following the second break, Madison Rogan was back in the pool with a solid 200 individual medley. The junior finished with a 2:09.75.  Finishing behind her training partner Nabors went 2:16.13, while Lily Sullivan raced to 2:16.21 to round out the scorers in the last individual event of the day.

The final event of the day was the 200 freestyle relay. UNC Asheville's A squad, consisting of Weller, Skylar Rogan, Humphries and Elizabeth Conte, finished in 1:41.75. The Bulldog B team comprised of all freshmen narrowly missed a freshman record in the event with a 1:42.73 (Amelia Ham, Bruno, Sullivan, Nabors). Asheville's third team - Skye Lewis, Brown, VandenBerg and Maren Oliver - raced to a 1:47.77 finish.

What's Next?

The Bulldogs will take a month break from the pool to gear up for the 2019 CCSA Conference Championships. The four-day meet is hosted by Liberty and will be held in the Liberty Natatorium.

At last year's CCSA Championships, UNC Asheville broke 14 program records, including three relay and 11 individual records.
