ATHENS, Ga. – Seeded fifth in the Division I singles portion of the event, UNC Asheville's Henry Patten advanced to the round of 16 at the 51st Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex with two wins on Friday, Sept. 7.

The nationally 60th-ranked Patten defeated Victor Chaw of Lipscomb 6-4, 7-5 in the round of 64 before earning a 6-3, 6-4 win over Aved Zatar of Georgia Gwinnett to advance to the round of 16.

Oli Nolan dropped his first round match on Friday in singles, but Patten and Nolan will take the court on Saturday in the doubles section of the prestigious fall championship.

Patten is looking to repeat in singles at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.

Patten was actually declared co-champion in the 2017 event along with then nationally-ranked No. 14 Tim Sandkaulen of Ole Miss. The two were supposed to meet up in the final, but due to the forecasted weather in the area from Hurricane Irma it was decided to declare co-champions.
