Blue Fends Off Silver’s Furious Comeback, 124-115, in Annual Intrasquad and First-Ever Alumni Meet

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – In the final preseason meet of the 2018-19 season, the Blue Team edged the Silver Team, 124-115, in the annual UNC Asheville swimming & diving intraquad meet and first-ever alumni meet at the Justice Center Pool on Saturday.

BULLDOG BITES

Highlights

At the second 10-minute break, the Blue Team seemed to have a commanding lead over the Silver Team, 76-56. However, the Silver Team came storming back in the final six events of the annual meet. Despite two relay disqualifications, the Silver Team only lost by nine points, 124-115.

Quotables

"I enjoyed seeing a lot of racing, and the team did a really good job of that today. This is a little different than a quality day, but that is good because it gets us prepared for the upcoming season.

"What I was looking for was seeing the new Bulldog freshmen and how they competed. We threw them in a lot of events to start their careers, may it be 'their event' or not. We had seven freshmen in the water today, so it was all new to them, which makes it exciting for everyone.

"The Silver Team did get disqualified on two relays, which were just silly mistakes. To only lose by nine points though is a positive sign of being resilient. The Blue Team fought hard too, and I think both teams were well matched this year.

"Having the alumni on the pool deck was incredible and a lot of fun. We had 16 alums here and 14 or so wanted to participate in the swimming events. They did a nice job in the pool, and they were cheering on the teams as well as coming up with their own cheers.

"With our first dual meet in two weeks versus Campbell, this intrasquad was an important meet. By no means were we fully ready to compete today, but this meet gave us an idea of what we need to fine-tune to get ready for head-to-head competition starting soon."

- Head swimming & diving coach Elizabeth Lykins

"Honestly being back in the pool and on campus didn't feel that different to me. I thought it was going to feel odd, but coming back to the team, they all welcomed us with open arms. The whole team camaraderie was still there, and that is really exciting to see."

"Coming to the first-ever alumni meet made it feel surreal because you get the chance to see the incoming freshmen and how great they are in and out of the pool. You see the new 'family' of the team, and it makes you feel like a 'grandparent' of the current team. Overall it has been a really great experience coming back to see former and current Bulldogs."
