Alsip Garners First Career Big South Golfer of the Week Honor

09.20.2018 | Women's Golf

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Behind the highest-ever individual finish of her career, junior UNC Asheville golfer Kellen Alsip was tabbed the Big South Conference's Golfer of the Week, following her tied for third performance at the MSU Greenbrier Invitational earlier this week.

The league made the official announcement on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018.

The Golfer of the Week accolade is the first weekly honor for the junior from Cincinnati, Ohio.

In the program's third year of existence, this accolade marks the third straight year Asheville has earned a Golfer of the Week honor. She joins current teammate Taylor Hinson as the only active Bulldogs to garner the weekly award.

In the two-day MSU Greenbrier Invitational, Alsip finished tied for third with Amalia Shahzan of Cincinnati at 12-over 228. Alsip improved her score every round by one stroke. Her best round was a 3-over 75, which came in the third round at the Greenbrier Country Club in Lexington, Ky.

The 75 round score was only one stroke away from matching a career-best that she set last year at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate, which ironically is the next tournament the Bulldogs will participate in beginning on Oct. 1.

As a team, UNC Asheville finished the three-round tournament tied for third with a 76-over 940 score.

Alsip and her teammates will take a week off before returning to the links in early October. The two-day F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate is hosted by Austin Peay State University and is in its 15th consecutive season of existence.
