UNC Asheville Closes Chattanooga Classic With Win Over Tennessee State

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – UNC Asheville volleyball closed out its Saturday with a 3-1 win over Tennessee State at the Chattanooga Classic.
The Bulldogs (3-3) split on the day though with Asheville falling to North Alabama 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-19) before earning the 3-1 win over Tennessee State.
Match One: North Alabama 3, UNC Asheville 0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-19)
The Bulldogs started strong in the first set against UNA, but North Alabama would pull away down the stretch to take the three-point win that set the tone for the match with the Lions taking the next two sets and the match win.
UNC Asheville was led in its loss by Kailey Hackett, who paced the Bulldog attack with 34 assists to go along with seven digs.
Julia Borges just missed on a double-double for the Bulldogs with 12 digs and nine kills. Madisen Zyburt led Asheville overall with 13 digs.
Cara Guthrie ended the match with a team-high 12 kills. She also had six digs and two service aces.
Cecilia Stack had six blocks in the match with the Lions.
Christina Ellwanger was the top performer for North Alabama with 16 kills.
Match Two: UNC Asheville 3, Tennessee State 1 (25-22, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22)
UNC Asheville closed out the Chattanooga Classic with a solid win over Tennessee State.
The Bulldogs picked up the first two sets before Tennessee State took the win in the third set. In the fourth set, the two teams battled back and forth, but UNC Asheville made sure to pull away over the final points to collect its third win of the year.
Three Bulldogs finished with double-digit kills in the match with Guthrie leading the way with 13 kills, four digs and two aces.
Julia Borges and Ansley Rooks both finished with 10 kills in the match.
Madisen Zyburt led the Bulldogs with a team season-best 24 digs in the match.
Carter Kennedy led the Bulldogs in assists in the match with 22. Kailey Hackett ended the match with 19 assists.
Julia Loveday had five blocks in the win over Tennessee State.
Rachel Henderson led three Tennessee State players with double-digit kills with 16.

Over 1,000 Assists
With her team-best 22 assists in the win over Tennessee State, UNC Asheville's Carter Kennedy surpassed 1,000 assists. She now has 1,018 in her Bulldog career.
Kennedy is one of two Bulldogs currently on the 2018 roster with over 1,000 assists. Kailey Hackett passed the 1,000 assist mark in UNC Asheville's regular season-closing 3-1 (27-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-20) home win over Liberty at the Justice Center on Thursday, Nov. 9.
Digging It
After her 24 digs in the win over Tennessee State, Madisen Zyburt now has four 20 or more dig performances in four-set matches in her Bulldog career.
Nearing 1,000 Kills
Cara Guthrie ended the Chattanooga Classic with 982 kills in her career.

UNC Asheville will open the tournament by facing host College of Charleston of the Colonial Athletic Association at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7. The next day, UNC Asheville will open its Saturday with a 10 a.m. match against Davidson of the Atlantic 10. The Bulldogs will close out the tournament by battling The Citadel for the second time in the 2018 season at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8.
