Bulldogs Drop Big South Opener
08.31.2018 | Men's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville men's soccer dropped its Big South Conference opener on Friday at Greenwood Field to league newcomer USC Upstate, 2-0.
USC Upstate (1-1, 1-0 Big South Conference) scored its first goal of the game in the seventh minute when Cam Philpot opportunistically scored in the six-yard box.
The two teams from there would enter the halftime break with the Spartans owning that same 1-0 advantage.
UNC Asheville (1-2, 0-1 Big South Conference) started to put together some good chances in the second half, but USC Upstate would add its second goal in the 65th minute when Erik Espinoza deflected in a shot.
UNC Asheville would have opportunities down the stretch, but the Spartans would hold on for the two-goal win.
The Spartans held a 19-5 advantage in shots and a 7-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities in the match.

Freshman Ameen Onasanya was tabbed as #ThePursuit Man of the Match by the coaching staff for his 53 strong minutes off the bench for the Bulldogs.
Quotable
"I'm disappointed if I am honest," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said. "I thought our level of competition was poor and I thought our guys spent half the game not really focused on the task at hand. I thought we were better in the second half.
"Overall, I'm disappointed. I'm not disappointed in the effort. At halftime we made some adjustments and we got better. We still did not generate enough chances and take enough shots. I thought it was a deserved victory tonight for Upstate. At the same, there is a lot of soccer left and we will get back to work, but on the night, we probably got exactly what we deserved out of that game because Upstate turned in a complete 90-minute performance."
Up Next
UNC Asheville will next hit the road for three straight matches with the first being Asheville's yearly matchup against a strong Georgia State program. The Bulldogs will take on the Panthers of the Sun Belt at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4, in Atlanta.
