Patten to Battle Lebedev of Notre Dame in First Round of NCAA Singles Championships on Wednesday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Two-time Big South Player of the Year Henry Patten will take on Alex Lebedev of Notre Dame in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship on Wednesday, May 23.
The opening round matchup is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start on Wednesday.
Patten is the first from UNC Asheville to ever have the chance to play at the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles Championships.
The 2018 NCAA singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 23-28 at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, N.C., after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 18-22. Wake Forest University will serve as host.
The matchup against Lebedev for Patten will feature two of the top players in the entire country. Patten enters the first round matchup ranked 75th nationally, while Lebedev is presently ranked 34th.
The winner of the first round matchup will move to to face the winner of the Jake Douglas (Washington)-Timo Stodder (Tennessee) match in the second round on Thursday, May 24. Douglas is presently ranked 46th nationally, while Stodder is ranked 16th.
Patten put together the best fall in program history in 2017, ending his historic fall campaign at the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, held Nov. 1-5, at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa.
Patten advanced to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships by taking the ITA Carolina Region title on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
The ITA Carolina Regional championship was the second title of the fall for Patten.
Earlier in the fall of 2017 in the oldest fall college tennis tournament in the nation it was Patten that was declared champion.
Patten was actually declared co-champion in the event along with national No. 14 Tim Sandkaulen of Ole Miss. The two were supposed to meet up in the final, but due to the forecasted weather in the area from Hurricane Irma it was decided to declare co-champions.
In total, Patten has picked up three top-30 wins during the 2017-18 athletic year entering the 2018 NCAA Singles Championships.
The Manningtree, Essex, United Kingdom, native was recently named the Big South Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.
After battling injuries early in the spring of 2018, the junior finished the regular season at 11-3 overall. His winning percentage of .786 was the best among those who played 10 or matches at No. 1 singles in the Big South.
Patten ended league play 5-1 at No. 1 singles.
Patten enters the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles Championships 12-3 overall in singles. He is currently in the midst of a nine-match winning streak.
In addition to his honoring as Big South Player of the Year, Patten was also chosen first-team in singles and doubles. A double major in Management and Economics with a 3.566 grade-point average, Patten was also chosen to the Big South All-Academic Team for the second consecutive season.
Patten commences the 2018 NCAA Singles Championship with an impressive 46-7 record all-time in singles in dual matches. He also owns an impressive 45-7 all-time mark in doubles.
Patten is just the sixth player in Big South men's tennis history since 2006 to earn a spot in the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles Championships.
An All-ACC second-team selection, Lebedev has nine victories this season over ranked opponents.
All matches in the NCAA Singles Championships shall be the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a 7-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches.
