04.15.2018 | Men's Tennis
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the second straight year, UNC Asheville's Henry Patten has been selected as the Big South Men's Tennis Player of the Year.
The league office officially unveiled the 2018 Big South Men's Tennis Awards on Monday, April 16.
Last year, Patten became the first Bulldog since Joven Cizek in 1985 to win the award. This year's honor means he is the first Bulldog to win the prestigious award twice.
Patten was ranked as high as 32nd nationally in singles this season. Currently ranked 79th nationally, Patten finished the regular season in the midst of an eight-match winning streak.
After battling injuries early in the spring of 2018, Patten finished the regular season at 11-3 overall. His winning percentage of .786 was the best among those who have played 10 or matches at No. 1 singles in the Big South.
The junior from Manningtree, Essex, United Kingdom, ended league play 5-1 at No. 1 singles.
In addition to his honoring as Big South Player of the Year, Patten was also chosen first-team in singles and doubles.
Currently ranked 56th nationally, Patten and doubles partner Olly Cull ended the regular season with an 11-2 record with all of their matches being at No. 1 doubles. The duo was 4-1 in conference matches.
The 11-2 record gave the Bulldog duo the best winning percentage (.846) at No. 1 doubles in the Big South Conference.
A double major in Management and Economics with a 3.566 grade-point average, Patten was also chosen to the Big South All-Academic Team for the second consecutive season.
UNC Asheville men's tennis will be the seventh seed in the 2018 Big South Men's Tennis Championship at the Rock Hill Tennis Center.
The seventh-seeded Bulldogs (7-12, 2-5 Big South Conference) will battle second-seeded Campbell (14-5, 6-1 Big South Conference) in the quarterfinals of the 2018 Big South Men's Tennis Championship at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 16.
