Patten Tabbed Big South Men’s Tennis Player of the Week

02.07.2018 | Men's Tennis

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the third time in his career, UNC Asheville men's tennis standout Henry Patten has been selected as the Big South Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week.

The league office made the official announcement on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018.

Patten garnered Player of the Week honors from the league office twice last year (Feb. 1 and March 8) en route to winning Big South Player of the Year honors. In total, Patten collected plaudits from the conference office five times in his career, as he was also named Freshman of the Week twice (March 30 and April 6) in the 2016 season.

Patten is currently ranked a program-best 32nd in the latest national rankings.

The national singles ranking puts him among the very elite in Big South Conference history. Only Radford's Martin Sayer has been ranked higher. Sayer ended his 2006 season ranked No. 31.

This past weekend, Patten downed 28th-ranked Eduardo Mena of Tennessee Tech 7-5, 7-6 at No. 1 singles. In a battle between the reigning Big South and OVC Players of the Year it was Patten who secured his second straight win over Mena. Last season on Feb. 11, 2017, at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown, Patten garnered a 6-1, 7-6 win over Mena.

Patten's victory over Mena marked his third win in 2017-18 against top-30 ranked foes.

In November, Patten downed No. 25 Daniel Valent of Vanderbilt in straight sets 7-5, 6-4, at the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa. Patten also collected a win over Emil Reinberg of Georgia 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-4 at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.

Patten and UNC Asheville (2-2) will next travel to Greenville, S.C. to take on Furman at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11.
