Track and Field Impresses on Final Day of Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational

LYNCHBURG, Va. – To conclude competition at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational, the UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field teams posted strong performances as there were eight top-10 finishes for the Bulldogs on Saturday inside the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.
Highlights
Senior Kayli Nichols stole the show for UNC Asheville at the Darius Dixon Invitational as she posted two strong finishes in the 60m hurdles and the 200m. To kick off her day, she qualified for the 60mH semifinals after recording the second-fastest time in the preliminary round (8.94). In the semis, Nichols shaved off 0.04 seconds (8.90) as she was only one spot away from qualifying for the finals.
In the 200m, the senior finished in the top half of the event as she posted a 26.10.
Sophomore Matthew Harding had a strong performance as he was runner-up in two events - 1000m and 500m. He recorded a time of 1:03.58 in the 500m and finished his performance at the Darius Dixon Invitational with a 2:26.88 in the 1000m.
In the field side of the meet, Victor Mathuthu had a strong day in the long jump and triple jump. With his leap of 6.76m in the long jump, Mathuthu marked the third-longest jump in program history. He placed eighth out of 17 jumpers in the event.
After breaking the triple jump record two weeks ago at the Keydet Invitational, Mathuthu fell 0.01m away from matching the record as he posted a 14.06m jump on Saturday. He finished seventh out of 17 jumpers in the event.
Senior Hunter Koike recorded a fast time in the 200m as the senior clocked a 22.26 which placed him ninth out of 39 runners. Kimani Anderson placed high as he posted a 22.76 in the same event.
Tyree McFalling and Koike finished 11th and 12th respectively in the 400m. McFalling posted a 50.32, and Koike fell just 0.04 seconds behind his teammate.
Dominic Collichio finished in the top-8 in the 5000m. The Carrboro, N.C. native recorded a 15:15.77 which is a season-best time for the senior.
Kamryn DeCarmo and Kelley Coleman finished 14th and 15th respectively as they were within 0.73 seconds of each other in the 1 mile run. DeCarmo posted a 5:17.95, and Coleman clocked in at 5:18.68 as both times are career-best marks for the Bulldogs.
What's Next?
The Bulldogs will take a few days as they prepare to compete in their final indoor regular season meet of the year - the Chipotle Marshall Invitational. The two-day meet is hosted by Marshall and will be held on Feb. 9-10 in Huntington, W. Va.
