BULLDOG BITES

Game Highlights

It was a back-and-forth affair to start the game, as neither team was able to gain a big edge early in the contest. UNC Asheville opened the game with a 3-0 run, but Longwood retaliated with a 10-3 run to make the game 10-6.

After ending the first quarter trailing 12-7, Zip Scott quickly led the Bulldogs to a 12-12 game, as she opened the second stanza with back-to-back made field goals. The Lancers posted a small 4-0 run to pull ahead 18-14, but the Bulldogs recorded an 8-0 run in just under a minute to give Asheville its second lead of the game, 22-18. However, the Lancers made an 8-2 run to end the first half with a 26-24 lead.

At the half, senior center Bronaza Fitzgerald was leading the Bulldogs. The Danville, Va. native had 13 points and nine rebounds, as she was one board shy of another double-double. She was 4-for-7 from the field and also tallied a pair of steals and two blocks.

To kick off the second half, Longwood held its lead for most of the third stanza, but the Bulldogs were able to get one-point leads twice in the ten-minute quarter. The Bulldogs were able to tie the game up for a ninth time at the end of the third thanks to back-to-back made free throws from Khaila Webb.

The Lancers' offense could not be stopped in the final 10 minutes, as it opened the stanza with a 16-0 run. Asheville ended the run with a Fitzgerald made free throw, but Longwood saw its lead get as high as 20 points (64-44) with 2:08 left in the game. Webb made UNC Asheville's first made field goal in the final 10 minutes, but it was too little too late for the Bulldogs, as they fell 67-54 on Saturday in Farmville, Va.

Fitzgerald tallied her 16th career and 12th double-double of the season, as the center totaled 20 points and 13 rebounds. The senior made six of the team's 17 field goals, and she went 8-for-11 from the free-throw line. She totaled six offensive rebounds, which allowed the Bulldogs to tally 20 second-chance points.

Webb was Asheville's second-leading scorer, as she netted 16 points (all of which came in the second half). She corralled four boards to go along with three steals and a pair of assists.

Jessica Wall and Scott combined for 12 points, three rebounds and five assists.

Longwood had three players in double-figures in Autumn Childress (16 points), Kate Spradlin (13 points) and Dayna Rouse (14 points).

The Bulldogs suffered its second road Big South Conference loss of the year. UNC Asheville drops to 14-13 overall and 11-5 in the league, and Longwood moves to 6-21 overall and 4-12 in the Big South.
