Women’s Golf Concludes First Day of Amelia Island Collegiate

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. – After playing the first two rounds on Monday, the UNC Asheville golf team concluded competition on the opening day at the Amelia Island Collegiate.

First Round Highlights

Sophomore Janie Thomas paced the Bulldogs in the first round. The Winston-Salem, N.C. native carded a 2-over 74 in the first 18 holes. She recorded 12 pars to go along with two birdies. 

Teammate Taylor Hinson was right behind her, as she finished the first round with a 4-over 76. Adelyn Deery rounded out the top-3 scores for UNC Asheville in the first round, as the sophomore carded a 7-over 79.

Second Round Highlights

Hinson improved her score by a stroke (3-over 75) on her second round of action on Monday. She inked 11 pars to go along with a pair of birdies on holes 8 and 15. 

Becca Black had UNC Asheville's second-best score on the final round of the day. The Elizabethtown, Ky. native etched a 6-over 78. 

After the first 36 holes at the Amelia Island Collegiate, Hinson is in the top-25 individually, as she sits tied for 23rd at 7-over 151. The freshman is only four strokes away from cracking the top-10.

Ayelen Irizar of Campbell currently leads the individual leaderboard. She opened her day with a 3-under 69 and finished with a 1-under 71. She currently holds a one-stroke lead on Sydney Shrader of North Florida and teammate Isabell Ekstrom.

Daytona State College currently sits atop of the team leaderboard at 3-over 579, but three strokes behind the Falcons is Campbell, who is nationally ranked at 49th.

As a team, UNC Asheville is 14th at 50-over 626. 

What's Next?

The Bulldogs conclude its competition at the Amelia Island Collegiate on Tuesday. The final round begins at 8:30 a.m. with the Bulldogs playing on holes 14-17B. UNC Asheville will be paired with UAB and Morehead State on the final 18 holes.
