Bulldogs Fall to Fayetteville State

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Three Bulldogs finished in double figures, but UNC Asheville dropped its home non-conference game to Fayetteville State, 80-63, on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018.

UNC Asheville (2-11) opened the game on a 9-2 run led by six early points from Donovan Gilmore. The two teams would be all tied up at 14-14 with 13:06 left in the first half.

Fayetteville State (1-8) would go on to own a 40-29 lead at the halftime break.

The second half started with UNC Asheville once again going on a 9-2 run with the Bulldogs down just four at 42-38 after a Tajion Jones fastbreak dunk with 16:50 left in the game.

UNC Asheville was down just one at 45-44 after an LJ Thorpe jumper with 13:30 remaining in the contest.

The Bulldogs would not be able to get any closer with the Broncos securing the victory.

Reigning Big South Freshman of the Week DeVon Baker finished with 21 points, four assists, three steals and one rebound to lead the Bulldogs.

Gilmore and Jones both had 12 for the Bulldogs with Jones also collecting four rebounds, three assists and one steal. Gilmore also had three rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Fayetteville State was led by Jaquel Richmond, who had 20 points off the bench.

The Bulldogs finished the game shooting 46.4 percent (26-of-56) from the field as a team. The Bulldogs shot 60 percent (15-of-25) from the field as a team in the second half. Fayetteville State closed out the game shooting 64.4 percent (29-of-45).

First Game Back

LJ Thorpe played in his first game in a Bulldog uniform since Nov. 13, 2017, against Fayetteville State. Thorpe ended up redshirting last season and was injured prior to the start of the 2018-19 season. In his first action of the year, Thorpe finished with a career-best nine points, four rebounds and three assists.

Fifth Over 20
DeVon Baker finished with 21 points in the game with Fayetteville State to record his fifth 20 or more point performance of the season. Baker has scored over 20 points in the last three games for UNC Asheville.

UNC Asheville's final non-conference matchup of the season will see the Bulldogs travel to Nashville, Tenn. to take on Vanderbilt at Memorial Gymnasium for the second consecutive season on Monday, Dec. 31. Things are scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m. EST on Monday. The game will be streamed live on SEC Network+. 

The Bulldogs just missed on knocking off the Commodores last season in a narrow 79-76 loss on Friday, Nov. 17, 2017.
