UNC Asheville Powers Past Hampton for Sixth Consecutive Victory

11.02.2018 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Cara Guthrie and Julia Borges both finished with double-digit kills and Grace Volk collected a double-double in UNC Asheville's 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-12) Big South victory over Hampton at the Justice Center on Friday, Nov. 2.

The victory over Hampton (8-16, 2-11 Big South Conference) was the sixth straight win for UNC Asheville (12-11, 7-6 Big South Conference).

UNC Asheville will next host Campbell at 2 p.m. at the Justice Center on Saturday. The match will serve as Senior Day for the Bulldogs.

Hampton picked up a win in the first set, but bounced back with wins in the second and third sets to take a 2-1 lead into the fourth set.

The fourth set was all Asheville with the Bulldogs racing out to an 11-1 lead to start the fourth set. UNC Asheville would continue its domination from there in the 25-12 set win that clinched a four-set victory for the Bulldogs.

Guthrie finished with 19 kills, six digs, two aces and two blocks in the match, while Borges had 11 kills, five digs and two blocks.

Volk led the Bulldogs with 38 assists to go along with 12 digs in acquiring the double-double. She also had one ace and solo block.

Currently leading the league in digs per set in conference matches, Madisen Zyburt continued her strong run of late with 20 digs in the match.

Julia Loveday finished with three blocks to lead the Bulldogs in the category.

Three Pirates ended the match with double-digit kills with Megann Delgado leading Hampton with 13 kills.

BULLDOG BITES

Thank You to the Seniors

UNC Asheville volleyball will honor its two seniors in Cara Guthrie and Madisen Zyburt prior to the match with Campbell on Saturday.

Quotable
"This match was a difficult one," UNC Asheville volleyball head coach Frederico Santos said. "No doubt about it. Hampton is a very good team. I don't think the record speaks to how good they are. Kudos to our team. They did fantastic against a team that is super-dangerous. Again, congratulations to our team. They did a great job. Now we are just looking forward to tomorrow."

Season-Best
Cara Guthrie's 19 kills in the win over Hampton were a team single-match season-best for UNC Asheville. Guthrie now has seven matches with 15 or more kills in a match this season.

Tied Career High
Grace Volk tied her career-best with her 38 assists in the win over Hampton. She also had 38 assists in the Bulldog win over Presbyterian College. Volk now has three double-doubles on the season after her 38 assists and 12 digs in the win over Hampton.

Nearing 1,000 Digs
Cara Guthrie already has surpassed 1,000 kills in her career earlier this season, but she is nearing joining the ultra-exclusive club of those with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. After the win over Hampton, Guthrie now has 983 digs in her career. Guthrie, who currently has 1,192 kills, would become just the 12th in UNC Asheville volleyball history to have over 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs.

Guthrie in the Big South Record Books
Cara Guthrie with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs would become just the 46th in Big South Conference history to have 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career. Guthrie also currently has 131 aces in her career, meaning that with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs she would become just the 35th in league history with over 1,000 kills, 1,000 digs and 100 aces.
