Bulldogs Battle in Road League Loss at Campbell

10.27.2018 | Men's Soccer

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Two second half goals allowed Campbell to take a 3-1 Big South victory over UNC Asheville men's soccer on Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Eakes Complex.

The match opened with Campbell (7-7-2, 4-2-1 Big South) collecting the opening goal of the game in the 22nd minute when Josh Signey scored off an assist from Ian Rees.

UNC Asheville (2-12-2, 0-7-0 Big South) evened things up in the match in the 31st minute when Izaiah Vignali headed in a beautiful free kick from Mac Gourlay. Vignali's third goal of the season would send the two teams into the halftime break tied at 1-1.

Goals in the opening six minutes of the second half would allow Campbell to pick up the 3-1 win over the Bulldogs.

Thibault Jacquel scored first for Campbell in the second half in the 48th minute when he scored off an assist from JJ Donnelly. Matt Lock then scored in the 51st minute to give the Camels their final goal of the match.

BULLDOG BITES

#ThePursuit Man of the Match
Mac Gourlay was chosen as #ThePursuit Man of the Match by the coaching staff for his efforts in the match at Campbell. Gourlay started and played all 90 minutes in the match. He also had the assist on the Bulldog goal.

Taking Over the Team Lead
Izaiah Viganli's goal in the match at Campbell allowed him to take the team lead in points with eight on the season. Vignali has three goals and two assists on the 2018 season. His three goals tie him with Taylor Durall and Lane Carroll for the team lead in the category.

Quotable
"I thought it was a good first half from us," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said. "Field conditions were very tough to play, and I thought we battled very well. Campbell scored a wonderful first goal. It was a really classy strike. Our response was quite good. Mac Gourlay served a nice ball forward and then Izaiah Vignali was able to challenge the keeper and score a great goal. That was good to go into the second half at 1-1. In the second half, I think we took the foot off the gas a little bit. We maybe showed a little bit of our youth and inexperience. We had that stretch early in the second half where we gave Campbell a chance to score those two goals and credit to them, they found a way. Then the game was at 3-1, but we clawed back into the match. We had a couple of good opportunities to be goal-dangerous, but we were not able to find a goal.

"It was overall a good performance. Full credit to Campbell. They massively needed three points to assure their place in the Big South standings and they got the job done, so there is a lesson there for our group to learn from as we move forward. We are now looking forward to our match on Wednesday where we can honor our seniors and, once again, we will be playing an opponent in Gardner-Webb that is looking very much to solidify their spot in the Big South Tournament. As we go into this final game, Asheville is going to have a role in how this Big South Tournament shapes up. We are looking forward to putting together a positive performance to cap the year at Greenwood Field."

Up Next
UNC Asheville men's soccer will next close out its regular season with a Halloween "Battle of the Bulldogs" showdown with Gardner-Webb at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31. The match will serve as Senior Night for the Bulldogs.
