UNC Asheville Drops Senior Night Match to Gardner-Webb in Overtime
10.31.2018 | Men's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville men's soccer closed out its 2018 season with a heartbreaking 2-1 Big South loss in overtime to Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at Greenwood Field.
The match opened with Gardner-Webb (4-10-1, 4-4-0 Big South) scoring in the 27th minute to take a 1-0 lead that they would hold at the halftime break.
UNC Asheville (2-13-2, 0-8-0 Big South) would go on to control the run of play for the majority of the second half.
The strong play from the Bulldogs eventually culminated in an Izaiah Vignali goal in the 69th minute. Viganli was assisted on the goal by Austin Howard.
The Bulldogs looked as if they would take the win in regulation with a Kyle Adams shot somehow not going into the back of the net. The ball that looked destined for goal skimmed off the post and went out for a corner kick.
UNC Asheville would have the better of the chances the rest of regulation, but neither team would be able to find a goal to send the game into overtime.
Jack Hoey scored the game-winning goal for Gardner-Webb in the 94th minute when his shot from distance went into the upper right corner to leave the Runnin' Bulldogs with a 2-1 victory.
Gardner-Webb finished with a 23-12 advantage overall in shots in the match, but in the second half that advantage was just 8-6. Gardner-Webb finished with a 9-5 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Quotable
"That was a fun soccer match," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said. "It was kind of what I expected and like I said earlier this week, I knew it was going to be entertaining. I thought the game started off really slow for both teams and then Gardner-Webb found a little bit of a flow in the first half and really peppered us for about 10 minutes and then were rewarded with the goal. This kind of woke us up a little bit.
"I thought in the second half we were fantastic. I think that we absolutely deserved our goal and Kyle Adams was a little unlucky to hit the post and we had a couple of other chances that went begging. I really liked the way that we played. In overtime though, full credit to the man from Gardner-Webb who scored the screamer. That's soccer sometimes. I was super-pleased with the way our group played tonight and the way we tried to play. There was no quit in this group. To have these guys continue to work hard in training and in the match, I think that's awesome. There is a correlation to why we broke our attendance record this year because this is a fun team to watch and we play attractive and fun attacking soccer."
