CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Seniors Ellie Stone and Justine James along with freshman Courtney O'Malley were honored by the Big South Conference on Thursday, October 25, 2018, as the three Bulldogs earned postseason awards.
Stone was named Second-Team All-Conference, while O'Malley earned All-Freshman Team honors. James was the lone Bulldog representative on the All-Academic Team.
Stone is a four-year starter for UNC Asheville, and the senior defender played primarily as a center back for the Bulldogs. During her tenure in Asheville Stone played in 68 matches, which includes 66 starts on the backline. She totaled 5,576 minutes in a Bulldog uniform, including logging 1,446 minutes during her senior year. She also contributed to UNC Asheville's 1.35 goals against average and pair of shutouts in 2018.
O'Malley started between the posts in 11 of the 16 matches for UNC Asheville this season. She logged 1,087 minutes as a freshman, while posting a 1.24 goals against average. On the year she posted a .862 save percentage, which ranked second in the Big South. She also grabbed 94 saves on the year for an average of 8.55 saves per game, which was tops in the conference. One of her biggest highlights during her rookie campaign was a 17-save performance versus VMI. Overall she posted four games of double-digit saves.
James, who played in all 16 games with nine starts in 2018, was named to the All-Academic Team. The senior from Cary, N.C. plans to graduate from UNC Asheville in 2019 with a bachelor's degree in accounting. With a 3.97 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) James has been on the Honor Roll for six semesters and the Chancellor's List for four semesters. In 2018 the senior forward received the Academic Excellence Award in Management, and in 2017 she earned the Management and Accountancy Department Scholarship. James is a member of the Order of Pisgah, SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) and Beta Gamma Sigma (exclusive business honor society that grants memberships to only 10 percent of graduating seniors).
One of James' biggest accomplishments was being an intern with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Core Assurance from January to March of this year. James has already accepted a full-time position with the Big Four accounting firm, and she will begin working with the company upon graduation.
