Bulldogs Complete Undefeated Weekend With Thrilling Five-Set Home Win Over Presbyterian College

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville picked up wins in the final two sets to secure a thrilling 3-2 (21-25, 25-20, 16-25, 25-19, 15-13) Big South victory over Presbyterian College on Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Justice Center.

Presbyterian College (7-13, 4-5 Big South Conference) picked up a 25-20 win in the first set before UNC Asheville (8-11, 3-6 Big South Conference) captured a 25-20 win in the second set. The Blue Hose would then garner a 25-16 win in the third set to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

UNC Asheville made sure that they were going to capture their sixth home win of the season next by picking up wins in the next two sets, starting with a 25-19 win in the fourth set.

The Bulldogs went up 6-3 early in the fifth set, but Presbyterian battled back to take a 10-7 lead. UNC Asheville from there would even things up at 12-all to put itself back in the match.

The two teams would be tied at 13-all shortly thereafter, but back-to-back kills by Cara Guthrie would propel the Bulldogs to the 15-13 win in the fifth set.

Two Bulldogs finished the thrilling win over Presbyterian College with double-doubles.

UNC Asheville's Grace Volk picked up her first career double-double in the Bulldog win with 38 assists and 18 digs.

Cara Guthrie picked up her second consecutive double-double with 18 kills and 14 digs in the UNC Asheville win.

Three Bulldogs captured double-digit digs in total with Madisen Zyburt finishing the match with 16 digs.

Julia Loveday ended the match with seven blocks.

Three from Presbyterian had double-digit kills in the match with Trinity Williams leading the way with 13 kills.

In collecting her first double-double of her college career, Grace Volk's 38 assists were also a team season-best.

Cara Guthrie picked up her second straight and sixth double-double of the 2018 season in the win over Presbyterian College.

Julia Loveday's seven blocks in the win over Presbyterian College were a team season-best in the category.

"The effort today was fantastic," UNC Asheville volleyball head coach Frederico Santos said after the match. "We played a formidable opponent in a tough Presbyterian team. We had to really play and I think we really had to fight to stay in the match. There were some moments there where we saw some wavering, but we stay committed until the end. I'm proud of the kids. We had a lot of people contribute today and I think that is very valuable moving forward. Go Dogs!"

UNC Asheville will next travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to take on Winthrop at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26. One day later the Bulldogs will travel to Boiling Springs, N.C. for the second "Battle of the Bulldogs" match of the season against Gardner-Webb at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27.
