UNC Asheville Picks Up 1-0 Shutout Victory Over VMI on Saturday Night at Greenwood Field
10.20.2018 | Men's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Behind a goal in the 10th minute from Austin Howard the UNC Asheville men's soccer team picked up a 1-0 shutout win over VMI on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Greenwood Field.
The lone goal in the match came in the 10th minute when a streaking Izaiah Vignali found an opening on the left side to send in a beautiful ball into the box that found the head of Austin Howard, who then deftly headed the ball into the back of the net.
UNC Asheville (2-11-2) would have quality chances the rest of the match, but the Keydets (1-13-1) would be able to keep them without another goal.
Nevertheless, the Howard goal would prove to be enough in a match that saw UNC Asheville finish with a 14-8 advantage in shots. VMI held a narrow 4-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Quotable
"Full credit to VMI," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said after the match. "They came and did exactly what I thought they would do. They never quit and they were very true to who they are in being hard-nosed and committed to the cause. VMI was in this game for 90 minutes. For us, I was very pleased that we got the early goal. I thought we improved on some things we wanted to work on and any time that you win you can never be disappointed. I'm not surprised that we won and I think it was the right result. Overall, it's good for our guys to go out and know that if they go out and do what they're supposed to do then they can find positive results.
"We've now got two games left. We've got a great opportunity to go down and play a good Campbell team. We still are a factor in the Big South title race and how that's going to go. Unfortunately, that's not going to be us going to the tournament, but we still could have a major effect on the standings and we're going to go down and do our best to continue to make it as difficult as possible for our opponents for the rest of the season."
