UNC Asheville Narrowly Misses on Upset Bid of Radford in 2-1 Loss in Double Overtime
10.13.2018 | Men's Soccer
RADFORD, Va. – UNC Asheville men's soccer almost pulled off the upset of Radford, but the Highlanders were able to pick up the win with a goal in the second overtime to take a 2-1 Big South win over the Bulldogs on Saturday, Oct. 13.
Radford (5-6-0, 3-2-0 Big South) scored the game's opening goal in the seventh minute when Khori Bennett scored off an assist from Gonzalo Rodriquez.
The two teams would enter the halftime break with that same score. Radford had a slight 8-4 shot advantage in the first half.
The second half started with UNC Asheville heavily pressuring the Highlanders, which eventually led to a Bulldog goal.
Lane Carroll scored the goal for the Bulldogs in the 65th minute when he forced a Radford turnover and then from over 20 yards out laced the ball into the back of the net to tie things up at 1-1.
The Bulldogs would control the run of play for the majority of the rest of the half, but would not be able to find the back of the net to send the game into overtime tied at 1-1.
UNC Asheville (1-11-2, 0-6-0 Big South) started off the first overtime really pressuring the Highlanders, but both teams would not be able to find a goal in the opening extra period.
Radford scored the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute when Dondre Robinson scored off an assist from Kieran Roberts.
Radford finished the game with a 16-8 advantage in shots. The Bulldogs took two more corner kicks than the Highlanders at 6-4.

Quotable
"I thought our guys were fantastic," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said after the match. "We went and played very well against a dynamic and athletic Radford team, who has been on a good run of form. I thought we were tactically very sharp. The first half was a little bit spotty, but then we made a couple of adjustments and I thought we were quite good in the second half. We had a great chance in overtime, but their goalkeeper made a great save. The goal that they scored in overtime was a great goal.
"It was heartbreaking for our guys for sure, but I could not be prouder of their effort. I'm not one for moral victories, but when you look at our process this shows that the process is working. Radford traditionally has had UNC Asheville's number in spades in terms of men's soccer and as you can see from the performance tonight our guys were fantastic and in terms of continuing to improve, playing great soccer and pride in the process that group was wearing blue tonight. I could not be prouder to be their coach and to be associated with these young men. They were brilliant tonight."
