Bulldogs Secure Strong First Day at ITA Carolina Regional Championship

CARY, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's tennis team put together a strong first day at the ITA Carolina Regional Championship at Cary Tennis Park.
UNC Asheville's Oli Nolan picked up two wins on Friday. He opened his day by besting Johan Fors of Gardner-Webb 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-1 before collecting a second round 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 win over Beau Pelletier of South Carolina.
Defending ITA Carolina Regional champion Henry Patten opened his day with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Julian Chousa of Wofford before ending his day with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Davide Innocenti of UNCW to advance to the third round.
Charlie Morkel secured his first win as a Bulldog with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Henrik Atlevi of Furman in the opening round. He dropped his next match 6-2, 6-2 in the second round to Raphael Lambling of South Carolina.
UNC Asheville's Olly Cull dropped his opening match in singles, but he picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win in the singles consolation round over Hayden Faulkenbury of North Carolina A&T.
Singles play continues on Saturday for the Bulldogs.
Doubles play in the ITA Carolina Regional Championship gets underway at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. The Bulldog doubles duo of Morkel and Cull will take on Ronny Georgi and Wisse Jonker of East Carolina.
Looking to capture their second doubles title of the fall, UNC Asheville's Patten and Nolan will first take on Joseph Schrader and Tristan Smith of NC State.
