For the third time in the last four contests, UNC Asheville out-scored its opponent in the second half as the Bulldogs posted their second victory in the last three games despite being down at halftime. Asheville's most recent comeback victory was on Jan. 9 in Radford, Va. as the Bulldogs downed Radford 67-56 on the road, which ended the Highlanders 21-game home winning streak. Ironically, UNC Asheville was the last team to defeat the Highlanders in the Dedmon Center (54-46, Jan. 30, 2016). The Bulldogs were down 29-23 at the half, and they out-scored the Highlanders 44-27 in the second half.
Khaila Webb led the Bulldogs in scoring as the senior guard scored 20 points (only two points shy of matching a single-game career high). Webb set season highs in both shots made (7) and shots attempted (19) in the win. It was also the eighth time this season she led the squad in scoring, and the 20-plus point performance was only the second time this season to occur.
Bronaza Fitzgerald recorded her fourth double-double of the season as she tallied 13 points on 4-for-5 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds. It was also the ninth double-double of her career. Jessica Wall rounded out the double digits in points for Asheville as she tallied 14 points.
As a team, the Bulldogs made 25 trips to the free-throw line and converted on 17 shots. They shot .471 percent (24-for-51) from the field as they out-rebounded the Highlanders 38-23. It was the third time this year Asheville has won after out-rebounding the opposition.
In the last four road contests for UNC Asheville (Wofford, USC Upstate, Campbell and Radford), the Bulldogs are 3-1 including winners of three straight. The Bulldogs are averaging 67.8 points per game while holding opponents to 62.0 ppg (+5.8 scoring margin). More impressively, Asheville is averaging nine more rebounds than opponents as its has out-rebounded opponents 146-110 during that same stretch.
Three Bulldogs have totaled over 40 total points in the last four road games. Wall has averaged 15.5 ppg in the last four contests as she has scored 62 total points. She has shot .575 percent from the field (23-for-40) including an impressive 15-for-37 (.405 percent) behind the three-point arc. Fitzgerald is first on the team with 10.8 rebounds per game and second with 14.5 ppg. Fitzgerald has also blocked five shots, which accounts for half of the team's blocked shots in the last four road contests. Webb is the third Bulldog to average double digits as she averages 10.5 ppg. She is nearly perfect from the free-throw line (.909, 10-for-11).
At the Big South Conference Media Day, the Bulldogs were selected to finish fifth, despite receiving the second-highest amount of first-place votes in the league. Radford earned seven of the total first-place votes as the Highlanders were selected the win the league.
Scouting the Lancers
Longwood enters Saturday's contest with a 3-11 overall record and a 1-2 mark in the league. Its most recent win was on Jan. 6 versus Presbyterian where the Lancers won 66-56. In its last six contests, Longwood is 1-5. The Lancers are also 0-7 in road games this year.
Autumn Childress is the backbone for the Lancers as the senior guard averages a double-double (10.5 ppg and 11.0 rpg). In the most recent game versus Gardner-Webb, she matched a Longwood Division I record with 18 rebounds. She has corralled 121 boards this year including 89 on the defensive glass. Kristina Antonenko and Micaela Ellis have started all 14 games for the Lancers as they average 8.9 ppg and 8.1 ppg, respectively. Ellis leads the team with 45 assists, while Antonenko is second on the squad in rebounds per game with 4.4.
All-Time History Versus Longwood
Saturday's contest marks the 15th all-time meeting between the two schools with Asheville leading 10-4.
The two clubs met three times on the hardwood last season, and the Bulldogs swept the season series. The Bulldogs even defeated the Lancers 65-59 in the opening round of last year's Big South Tournament. In the last home game, the Bulldogs won 84-53 as Chatori Major connected for 26 points while Wall poured in 14 points.
The Bulldogs have won nine straight head-to-head meetings with the Lancers. The last loss versus Longwood was 67-54 on Feb. 23, 2013 in Asheville, N.C.
