UNC Asheville Men’s Tennis Set to Open Fall Campaign This Weekend

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's tennis team will open up their fall schedule this weekend by dually competing in the 2017 Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga. and at the USC Upstate Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C.

In the Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex and the Intramural Courts, the Bulldogs will be represented by reigning Big South Player of the Year Henry Patten and newcomer Oli Nolan. They will be competing in both singles and doubles.

In the Division I doubles at the event, the tandem will open things up on Friday by taking on Josh Howard-Tripp and Branch Terrell of Arkansas.

In singles, Patten has a bye into the round of 32 in Division I singles at the event where he will face off against Kevin Konfederak of Georgia Gwinnett. In the Division II singles at the event, Nolan will take on Stathis Tsiranidis of Mercer in the round of 32 at 12 p.m. on Friday.

At the USC Upstate Invitational there will be two divisions titled "Black" and "Green." The tournament will feature Furman, Presbyterian College, Kennesaw State and Belmont Abbey in addition to the Bulldogs.

In the "Black" singles division, UNC Asheville's Olly Cull will open the event by taking on Alejandro Bejar of Presbyterian College at 3 p.m. on Friday. Asheville's Andrew Sinai will battle Furman's Trevor Croyder at 3 p.m. as well.

In the "Green" singles division, Bulldog newcomer Reese Daly will open things by squaring off against Jaime Castillo Lopez of Presbyterian College. UNC Asheville sophomore Edward Colclough will take on USC Upstate's Fernando Bernardes. All three of these matches will be at 3 p.m.

At 4 p.m., UNC Asheville newcomer Finlay McFayden will tangle with Austin Anderson of Kennesaw State. UNC Asheville's James Massie will face off against Presbyterian College's Daniel Stenger Valdes at 4 p.m. as well.

In the doubles section of the tournament on Friday, UNC Asheville's tandem of Daly-Colclough will take on the Spartan duo of Ankush Arora-Francisco Neto at 12 p.m. UNC Asheville's Cull and Massie will square off against Kennesaw State's Lahey and Triana. The Bulldog duo of McFayden and Sinai will challenge USC Upstate's Luka Eble and Samuel Schiano.

Fall Schedule

This weekend's tournaments will be the first of the fall for the Bulldogs. Next week, the Bulldogs will compete at the Duke James Bonk Invitational Sept. 15-17 before competing in the Elon Fall Invitational Sept. 22-24. The Bulldogs will travel to Davidson for a tournament Sept. 29-Oct. 1 before the ITA Regionals Oct. 13-17 that will contested at Duke. The Bulldogs will play in the UNCG Fall Invitational Oct. 20-22 before playing in Charlotte's tournament the next week Oct. 27-29. The fall will conclude with UNC Asheville taking part in Wake Forest's fall tournament Nov. 3-5.
