Davidson Narrowly Claws Past Bulldogs in Overtime in High-Quality Match at Greenwood Field

09.06.2017 | Men's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Sports can provide the ultimate exhilaration, but at the same time they can also be incredibly cruel sometimes and that is exactly what happened in UNC Asheville's 3-2 loss to Davidson in overtime before another packed house at Greenwood Field on Wednesday, Sept. 6.

"I thought overall we played well. Soccer is a cruel game, but we did enough to win tonight, so I'm very disappointed in the result but proud of our effort," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said.

The Bulldogs (0-4-0) were the first to arrive on the scoreboard in the match in the 29th-minute when senior forward Jackson Allen hit an absolute cracker from approximately 30 yards out.

The golazo from Allen would leave the Bulldogs with a 1-0 advantage at the halftime break.

The Wildcats (3-0-0) would even the score at 1-1 in the 63rd-minute when Matt Reinikka scored off an assist from Hunter Howard.

Davidson looked as if they might take the match in regulation in the 85th-minute when Coleman Richards netted his second goal of the year off an assist from Danny Davis.

Sophomore Kyle Adams and the Bulldogs had other ideas though as his scorcher screamed into the back of the nets in the 87th-minute to even things up at 2-2 and eventually send the game into overtime.

Charlie Caswell scored the game-winning goal for the Wildcats in the 95th-minute off Davis' second assist of the day.

Davidson finished with a 23-11 shot advantage in the contest, but UNC Asheville was more proficient in strong opportunities with seven of the Bulldogs' 11 shots on frame.

BULLDOG BITES

Quotable
"It was a good college soccer match. I'm gutted for our guys. I thought that we played really well. Set pieces did us in and that's something that you would love to say there is a magic pill for (to defend well), but you've got to make sure you win your individual battles. They did a better job at it and scored three goals that resulted from set pieces. It was a wonderful goal from Jackson Allen and what a great and timely finish from Kyle Adams. It was also good goalkeeping from Tyler Moore. We've got a little bit of a break now for a couple of days to get our bodies healthy and we're going to play a very good Furman team who is ranked in the top-20, and that's going to be another great opportunity for us. This is a tough pill to swallow right now for sure." – Head Coach Mathes Mennell

#ThePursuit Man of the Match
UNC Asheville redshirt junior goalkeeper Tyler Moore was fantastic between the pipes against Davidson. Moore's efforts in making eight saves on the evening helped him earn #ThePursuit Man of the Match honors from Mennell and the coaching staff.

Up Next
The Bulldogs will next travel just up the road to Greenville, S.C. to take on No. 13/18 Furman at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10.
