Bulldogs Fall to No. 10 Furman
09.10.2017 | Men's Soccer
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team tested the No. 10 team in the country in Furman, but in the end it would be the Paladins that would be able to pick up a 4-0 win on Sunday, Sept. 10, at Stone Soccer Stadium.
The Paladins scored their opening goal of the match in the fifth minute when Cole McLagan scored the first of his two goals on the day. The Paladins would add one right before halftime when Connor Hubbard tapped in a cross to set the score at 2-0 at intermission.
UNC Asheville controlled the run of play for the opening minutes of the second half.
The first really strong scoring opportunity of the day for the Bulldogs came in the 52nd-minute when Michael Luke narrowly missed on cutting the Paladin lead in half at the time when his shot attempt hit the right post.
Just a few minutes later, Luke would once again threaten the Paladins with his shot this time pinging off the crossbar in the 57th-minute.
The two narrow misses for UNC Asheville turned into more scoring for the Paladins with Furman scoring two more in the second half to take the 4-0 win.
Furman owned a 21-5 shot advantage over the Bulldogs in the match. Furman had a 5-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

"Furman is pretty good, but I don't think they are 4-0 better than us. I thought we conceded way too early in the first half and gave them way too much time and space. The second goal was a really good entry pass and a really good goal. I thought we gave them overall too much time and space in the first half. I'm still a little bit in disbelief that Michael Luke's effort hit the post and then his other effort hit the bar, and those are bounces that if you get the game could have easily been on balance 60 minutes into the game 2-2. Furman's really good, and it's frustrating for us in that we had really good moments. We did find some guys and some performances that they put themselves into good spots. I am really overall proud of our effort in the second half particularly." – Head Coach Mathes Mennell
