Bulldogs Put Together Solid Performance in Loss at UNCG

09.16.2017 | Men's Soccer

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Despite out-shooting its opponent, UNC Asheville men's soccer narrowly fell, 2-0, to UNCG on Saturday evening at UNCG Soccer Stadium.

The Bulldogs had the first of seven great opportunities to score in the match in the 13th-minute on a shot by senior Ben Chapal, but UNCG took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Leeroy Maguraushe scored in the 32nd-minute.

The Bulldogs (0-6-0) would control the run of play for the opening minutes of the second half with junior Joe LaCasto narrowly missing his opportunity in the 58th-minute. Just a few minutes later, the Bulldogs had another terrific chance, but Chapal's volley was blocked and it went wide to leave the score at 1-0 in favor of UNCG.

UNCG (1-4-1) would then score against the run of play in the 63rd-minute to take a 2-0 lead they would never relinquish.

The Bulldogs would go on to heavily out-shoot the Spartans, 10-5, in the second half.

Both teams had four corner kick opportunities in the match.

BULLDOG BITES

Quotable
"I thought we were excellent tonight, but soccer is just a cruel game sometimes. Quite honestly, the better team did not win tonight and that's a harsh reality of our sport. I was really pleased and I loved the way we played tonight. I am obviously upset that we did not win the scoreboard, but we were excellent and it's frustrating not to get a result. I told the team if we replicate the way we trained during the week and played tonight we are going to win a lot of soccer matches. Now we move on play a great Wofford team on Tuesday at home. Overall, I am just once again very pleased with the way our players represented UNC Asheville tonight. The only place we did not come out on top was on the scoreboard." – Head Coach Mathes Mennell

#ThePursuit Man of Match
Joe LaCasto and Ben Chapal both played outstanding matches to garner #ThePursuit Man of the Match honors from Mathes Mennell and the UNC Asheville coaching staff.

Up Next
