Bulldogs Pick Up First Win of Season in Front of Tremendous Crowd at Greenwood Field
09.19.2017 | Men's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team emphatically picked up its first win of the 2017 season by easily dispatching of Wofford, 2-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
The Bulldogs controlled the run of play for pretty much the entire match and probably could have added even more goals to their total as they had numerous quality chances in the first and second half.
UNC Asheville (1-6) scored the first goal in its win over Wofford (0-7) in the 15th-minute when senior Ben Chapal assisted sophomore Luiz Felipe Dantas.
Chapal would get one of his own minutes later when in the 27th-minute fellow Asheville native Jackson Allen beautifully sent a through ball toward Chapal, who would do the rest and slot the ball into the back of the net for what would be the final goal of the night.
UNC Asheville overall out-shot the Terriers, 19-13, in the match. The Bulldogs had 10 of their 19 shots in the match on frame. UNC Asheville also held a slight 5-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

"I am obviously pleased with the win. I thought we probably could have scored a couple of more goals, but we're certainly happy to see our guys find the result they deserve and also, too, to win on HFC Night in front of such a great crowd on a night when we also received some great donations for the Manna Food Bank. I was really pleased overall with the way we got on the front foot and scored some goals. I was really pleased with that." – Head Coach Mathes Mennell
Order Up a Clean Sheet
On the same day that he was named to the prestigious "Order of the Pisgah" at UNC Asheville, goalkeeper Tyler Moore picked up the clean sheet between the pipes for the Bulldogs. Moore made four saves in the Bulldog win.

The Big South Conference opener for UNC Asheville men's soccer is the final match of a Homecoming Saturday that will also see UNC Asheville women's soccer open league play at 3 p.m. against Charleston Southern.
"We've got a great opponent next and a great occasion in Homecoming where we'll be honoring Mark Magee, who will be getting inducted into the UNC Asheville Athletics Hall of Fame. Being a part of a Homecoming doubleheader with women's soccer is going to be great as well. We'll be facing a very talented High Point team and we're going to have our hands full in general. I am certainly once again overall just very pleased for our boys to get the result and hopefully we are off on the right track." – Head Coach Mathes Mennell
