ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team opened its 2017 Big South Conference schedule with a solid 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 21-25, 25-19) victory over Gardner-Webb before a great crowd at the Justice Center.

The two teams would play extremely close in the first set before UNC Asheville went 2-0 in the match after the dominating 25-17 win in the second game.

Gardner-Webb (6-7, 0-1 Big South Conference) controlled things for the most part in the third set before Asheville took control early in the fourth set. UNC Asheville (5-7, 1-0 Big South Conference) would be up 14-7 at one point before Gardner-Webb pulled back to within three at 21-18.

The Bulldogs would score five of the next six points with a kill by sophomore right side Ansley Rooks ending the match with Asheville taking a 25-19 victory in the fourth set. UNC Asheville hit .378 as a team in the fourth set.

The MVP at The Henson's Hawk Invite this past weekend, junior outside hitter Cara Guthrie finished UNC Asheville's league win over Gardner-Webb with 18 kills and 15 digs.

Henson's Hawk Invite All-Tournament Team member Ava Venema had 11 kills in the match.

Sophomore defensive specialist Sheridan Salisbury led the Bulldogs in digs in the match with 16. She also had five service aces.

Sophomore setters Kailey Hackett (23) and Carter Kennedy (20) as always paced the Bulldog attack. Kennedy had seven digs in the match.

Three from Gardner-Webb finished with double-digit kills with Kaelyn Dyson leading the way with 14 kills.

BULLDOG BITES

Battle of the Bulldogs Win No. 1 of 2017-18 Goes to Asheville

The Big South opener for UNC Asheville was also the first "Battle of the Bulldogs" meeting of the year in the battle for supremacy among the Big South's Bulldogs in Gardner-Webb and UNC Asheville.

Quotable
"It was great to start the conference season in front of a great home crowd. I think it gets the excitement high. Obviously, the first conference match of the year is usually the hardest, so getting this one under our belt I think that hopefully the trend is getting better, but we've got a tough one on Friday. Campbell is playing really well right now. But I thought tonight we had an awesome performance." – Head Coach Frederico Santos

Up Next
UNC Asheville will next play host to Campbell as part of the Homecoming festivities at UNC Asheville. The Bulldogs and Camels will face off at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22. The match will be streamed live on the Big South Network.
