Patten Secures Massive Wins for Men’s Tennis Program at Southern Intercollegiate Championships

ATHENS, Ga. – Henry Patten and the UNC Asheville men's tennis team continued making a massive statement on Sunday at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships and the USC Upstate Invitational.
Patten opened the day on Sunday by besting 15th-seeded Ignacio Garcia of FAU in the quarterfinals 7-5-, 6-3.
The reigning Big South Player of the Year advanced to the finals of the Southern Intercollegiate Division I draw by downing second-seeded Emil Reinberg of Georgia 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-4.
Reinberg finished the 2016-17 season for Georgia as the 51st-ranked player in the country in the final ITA Division I rankings of the season.
"I am obviously very proud of what we are accomplishing this weekend," UNC Asheville men's tennis head coach Tom Hand said. "Henry's win against Georgia's No. 2 was a massive win for our program."
In advancing to the finals Patten has bested the second, fifth, 14th and 15th seeds to make his way to the finals at the Southern Intercollegiate.
Patten will take on seventh-seeded Tim Sandkaulen of Ole Miss in the finals of the Southern Intercollegiate on Monday.
In the Division II singles portion of the event, UNC Asheville's Oli Nolan picked up a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(11) win over Jose Alonzo of Arkansas in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Nolan bowed out with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 loss to Malik Bhatnagar of Stetson.
In the Division I doubles section of the fall tournament the duo of Patten and Nolan finished their run with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski of Georgia in the semifinals.
At the USC Upstate Invitational, UNC Asheville's Andrew Sinai had his impressive run to the finals halted by Alejandro Bejar of Presbyterian, who picked up a narrow 7-6(5), 6-2 win over Sinai in the finals of the "Black" draw.
In the doubles consolation finals it was the Bulldog tandem of Olly Cull and James Massie of UNC Asheville besting Dalhem and Anderson of Kennesaw State, 6-2, to earn the crown.
