HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – UNC Asheville men's soccer opened its 2017 regular season with a 3-0 road loss to Marshall on Friday, Aug. 25, at Hoops Family Field.
The game opened up as a back-and-forth affair with UNC Asheville (0-1) having the greatest opportunity early with Joe LaCasto having his shot in the first few minutes of the game narrowly blocked by the Herd.
Marshall (0-1) scored its first goal of the match in the 20th-minute when Lewis Knight scored the first of his two goals on the day.
The scored would be 1-0 at the halftime break, but Knight scored his second of the day in the 57th-minute when he finished off a John Pappas cross into the box from 10 yards out.
The final goal of the match for the Herd came in the 81st-minute when Jaime Izquierdo Roiz scored off a penalty kick for his first collegiate goal.
The Bulldogs despite the scoreline did continue to have some quality chances in the match with Zack Compton leading the Bulldogs with three shots.

Quotables
On overall match
"We played a very good team and a very good team defended their home turf well tonight. I thought we did some good things, but they did more good things than us. We had the best chance early on, but we were unable to take advantage and they did. Overall, I'm not devastated because I thought we did some good things. When you take on big schools from big conferences these are games that you want to play. We have to become more goal dangerous and start asking more questions of our opponent. We have to increase our efficiency and we have to increase our efforts going towards goal." – Head Coach Mathes Mennell

The Bulldogs and Lions are set to square off at 10 p.m. EST (7 p.m. PST) in Los Angeles on Friday, Sept. 1.
The second match of the West Coast swing for UNC Asheville will see the Bulldogs take on UC Irvine of the Big West Conference at 10 p.m. EST (7 p.m. PST) on Sunday, Sept. 3.
