Bulldogs Open West Coast Trip With Loss to LMU
09.02.2017 | Men's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – UNC Asheville men's soccer opened its two-match trip to the West Coast with a 2-0 loss at Loyola Marymount on Friday, Sept. 1.
The final scoreline is a little misleading in the fact that UNC Asheville men's soccer (0-2-0) controlled much of the action in the contest, but were not able to capitalize.
In fact, the first goal of the game for the Lions came against the run of play as the Bulldogs had been putting tons of pressure on LMU (1-2-0) for the previous over 10 minutes, but nevertheless Griffin Bell was able to score in the 41st-minute to set the score at 1-0 in the Lions' favor at the halftime break.
Much of the second half possession belonged to the Bulldogs with senior midfielder Richie Lee having one of the best opportunities on the evening in the 57th-minute when he was left alone on the left side of the 18-yard box. His shot went high to keep the score 1-0 at the time.
Just under 20 minutes later with UNC Asheville looking to get the equalizer it would instead be LMU that would score its second goal of the match with Alvaro Madrigal tapping home a cross from John Bovill in the 76th-minute.
Loyola Marymount out-shot the Bulldogs overall, 26-10, in the match, but only nine of those 26 shots were on frame. UNC Asheville goalkeeper Tyler Moore made seven saves on the night.
The Lions had a slight advantage in corner kick opportunities in the match at 6-4.
BULLDOG BITES
Quotable
"I liked the way we played. I think that both goals came against the run of play. When they actually scored it was against the run of the play. Those are plays that come back to get you, and you've got to take your chances. I thought overall we were better in the attacking third. I also thought we created enough chances to win it. We just have to continue to get better. We played a really good team tonight at their place and gave them all they could handle. It's disappointing, but that's college soccer at times. I am however pleased that we are getting closer to a complete performance and we've got a great opportunity against a very good team in Irvine on Sunday." – Head Coach Mathes Mennell
Man of the Match
UNC Asheville junior defender Brandon Millington was chosen by Mennell and the coaching staff as the Man of the Match for his tremendous efforts in his 86 minutes on the pitch on the evening.
