Season in Review: Inaugural Season a Huge Success for Women’s Golf

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's golf laid the foundation for success for years to come in their inaugural season in the 2016-17 athletic year.

"Obviously building a program from scratch is not an easy task to do, but I felt like the inaugural class that I had laid a great foundation for where I want this program to go," women's golf head coach Breanne Hall said. "We started the year off at William & Mary (Sept. 10-11, 2016) with 952 as our three-day total and then we finished the Big South Championship (April 17-19, 2017) at the end of the year with a three-day total of 926. It was a 26-shot improvement from tournament one to the finish, and I think that just shows that all the hard work they put in led to great strides from where we started to where we finished the year."

UNC Asheville women's golf did something that hardly anyone expected and most programs do not even think about in year one by winning a tournament at the Oyster Shuck Match Play (April 3-4, 2017) at the Patriot Point Links in Mount Pleasant, S.C.

The victory will always hold a special place in program history.

"It was one of those things where I probably still think about that very often and it's been months since we won that event," Hall said. "That was just such a special moment. It was our inaugural season, it was my rookie season, and to do it with my first recruiting class that will always be a special moment."

Maybe more impressive than the fact the Bulldogs won the Oyster Shuck Match Play in year one is that they did so with all freshmen.

"The transition to college golf can be difficult," Hall said. "That high school aspect – even though it's a team sport in high school – it's more of an individual sport. I love the progress that we made in the fact that these six individuals came in and bonded as a team."

The work for season two of UNC Asheville women's golf is very much already in progress as this past season's inaugural class and the newcomers are working hard to better their games.

"I'm pleased with some of the schedules that they've put together," Hall said. "They're out traveling, they're out playing together in tournaments. Quite a few of them put some really good tournaments on their schedule as far as US Open qualifiers, US Amateur qualifiers, and I think that's important that they play in some of the bigger stage tournaments to help them improve their games."

The Bulldogs will still be incredibly young in the upcoming 2017-18 season, but Hall is looking forward to seeing how things progress in year two.

"We're going to sit down as a team at the start of the year and re-set our goals," Hall said. "We want to set our goals high, but we also want to be realistic. I think we need to stay in that mindset of this is a process and success is not going to come overnight. We've got to put hard work into it."
