2017 UNC Asheville Women's Soccer Schedule
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's soccer head coach Michelle Demko officially released the 2017 women's soccer schedule on Wednesday, June 21, 2017.
The 2017 UNC Asheville women's soccer schedule will feature 12 home games including exhibitions as well as a challenging full slate of Big South Conference matches.
The Bulldogs will have two home tune up matches at Greenwood Field before opening their 2017 regular-season. The first of the two will be a Mountain Rivalry exhibition matchup against Western Carolina of the Southern Conference at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 7. Last year during the regular-season, UNC Asheville picked up a 3-1 win over Western Carolina, which was the first for the Bulldogs over the Catamounts since the 2004 season.
UNC Asheville will then welcome Wright State of the Horizon League for an exhibition at Greenwood Field at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12.
Demko knows just how important these two exhibitions are for the Bulldogs.
"I'm excited for the upcoming season and to get started with this talented group of soccer players," Demko said. "Knowing we return a large number of our players, I decided on two preseason scrimmages that will be very challenging right off the bat. Four days after arriving on campus we match up against a very good SoCon team in Western Carolina. They are incredibly athletic, move the ball well and have a relentless pursuit in both attacking and defending. Playing a team of this caliber four days after coming together will help set the tone for our competitive schedule, but also remind us that we must play at a higher level to continue to push this program forward. We played Western last year and it was a 90-minute test of our fitness and our mentality. Having that experience, players will understand how critical it is to be focused and ready. They will create that type of atmosphere day one of preseason so they feel prepared to play at that level and also help our freshmen understand this is the environment they will need to be accustomed in order to contribute to our program's success. Five days later, we play Wright State, a team we have never matched up against. Again, I like this early Horizon league opponent in preseason because it will test our maturity and mentality. We will know nothing about them, but have to get on the field and compete to dictate tempo and make adjustments in the run of play, which I believe will be helpful during regular-season competition."
UNC Asheville's 2017 regular-season will open in Lexington, Va. with the Bulldogs battling former league foe and current SoCon opponent VMI for the first time since 2015. The regular-season opener for the Bulldogs will kick off at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 18.
Two days later, UNC Asheville will play host to Wofford of the SoCon for its season opener at Greenwood Field. The contest against the Terriers gets underway at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 20. The Bulldogs picked up a 2-1 win last year over Wofford in Spartanburg, S.C. on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016.
After the home opener, UNC Asheville will then play two consecutive First Coast foes in North Florida and Jacksonville with one within the friendly confines of Greenwood Field and the other on the road in Jacksonville, Fla. The first of the two will be on Friday, Aug. 25, when Atlantic Sun foe North Florida visits Greenwood Field at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs will then travel to Jacksonville to take on the ASUN's Jacksonville University at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 27.
The second month of the 2017 regular-season for the Bulldogs will start with UNC Asheville welcoming UAB of Conference USA to Greenwood Field at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 3. After a week off, UNC Asheville will then return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 10, by traveling to Kennesaw, Ga. to tangle with the Owls of Kennesaw State. The matchup against the ASUN foe is slated for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
Two straight home matches at Greenwood Field come next with CAA opponent Elon first visiting UNC Asheville's home pitch at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14. The Bulldogs welcome USC Upstate of the ASUN to Greenwood Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Sept. 16. UNC Asheville collected a 2-0 win last season over USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C. on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016.
The Bulldogs will travel to Orangeburg, S.C. on Wednesday, Sept. 20, for a matchup against SC State of the MEAC. The game, which is UNC Asheville's final non-conference contest of the year, is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start. The Bulldogs picked up an impressive 4-1 home win over SC State last year at Greenwood Field on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016.
Demko overall is excited about how the non-conference slate will prepare her team for the toughness of league play.
"The idea with our non-conference schedule is play against high-level teams so we have to face a greater demand for 90 minutes," Demko said. "In order to move our program forward we have to play schools that will continue to make us reveal our identity. These games will allow our staff to see where potential breakdowns might occur so we can address those issues prior to competing in the Big South Conference. New opponents to our schedule are VMI, Elon, North Florida and Jacksonville. I expect all four games to stretch us with regard to tempo, style of play and physical demand. Familiar opponents will be UAB, Wofford, SC State and USC Upstate. UAB is a return game from our prior season. They have a new coach so they will come in re-energized and ready to establish themselves in Conference USA. All of the above should prepare us for the rigors of conference play. Every Big South school comes to play and this year will be no different. I anticipate hard, competitive games from top-to-bottom. Our goal is establish a better rhythm with each game we play. If we can do this, we will be playing our best soccer in conference."
UNC Asheville opens Big South Conference play by hosting Charleston Southern for a 3 p.m. contest on Saturday, Sept. 23. The match is part of UNC Asheville's annual Homecoming festivities.
The Bulldogs will then hit the road for the first time in league play for a 7 p.m. match on Wednesday, Sept. 27, against Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C. Just a few days later, the Bulldogs will travel to Buies Creek, N.C. for a 6 p.m. conference matchup against Campbell on Saturday, Sept. 30.
The final month of the regular-season for UNC Asheville will commence with two consecutive league home games for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will first play host to Presbyterian College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Greenwood Field. UNC Asheville collected a 1-0 win over the Blue Hose last season in Clinton, S.C. on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016.
UNC Asheville then welcomes defending Big South regular-season champion High Point to Greenwood, S.C. on Saturday, Oct. 7. Kickoff in the match is slated for 4 p.m. The Bulldogs handed the Panthers their only league loss of the regular-season last year in a 1-0 win over High Point on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016, in High Point, N.C. The win was UNC Asheville's first in High Point since 2000 and the Bulldogs' first overall over the Panthers since 2009.
The final four games of the regular-season for UNC Asheville start with the Bulldogs traveling to Rock Hill, S.C. to face the Eagles of Winthrop on Wednesday, Oct. 11. The match is scheduled to get underway at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs picked up a 1-0 win over the Eagles last season at Greenwood Field on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016.
The Bulldogs then welcome Longwood to Asheville at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14. The final road match of the year will see the Bulldogs travel to Radford, Va. to face off against the Highlanders of Radford at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18.
UNC Asheville's final regular-season match of the 2017 season has the Bulldogs taking on defending Big South Tournament champion Liberty at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, at Greenwood Field.
