Radford Takes Game-One of Series 13-2 Over Bulldogs
05.06.2017 | Baseball
Due to inclement weather, the series began a day later than originally planned. Mother Nature continued to wreak havoc with the schedule on Saturday as only one game of what was originally slated to be a doubleheader was played. UNC Asheville (18-25, 7-9 Big South) and Radford (19-24, 7-9 Big South) will now play a 10 a.m. twinbill on Sunday, May 7, to close out the series.
Radford scored a single run in the top of the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead. The Highlanders then opened up the scoring with three runs in both the top of the fourth and fifth innings. Radford added a single run in the sixth and capped off the scoring with one run in the eighth and four more in the ninth.
The Bulldogs scored one run in the bottom of the seventh when Danny Wilson ripped his fourth home run of the season to break up the shutout.
In the bottom of the ninth, Kyle Carruthers batted in Carmine Pagano to set the score at 13-2, but that was as close as the Bulldogs could manage.
Wilson led the charge at the plate for UNC Asheville with a 2-for-4 performance while Pagano, Justin Woods and Brandon Lankford all added single hits.
Radford's Spencer Horwitz led all batters with a 4-for-5 outing that included two runs scored and three runs batted in.
On the mound, Blake Brown (0-1) started the game and pitched the first 3.1 innings before giving way to Brandon Harris, Ryan Tapp and Jesse Juday. Brown struck out five batters with Harris and Tapp both adding two and Juday struck out one.
For the Highlanders, Zack Ridgely (5-5) pitched 7.2 innings and struck out 13 batters, living up to his billing as the Big South Conference Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

"Whether you win or lose by 10 or one, it's still just one game. We need to come out tomorrow with more energy and focus if we want a different outcome." – Scott Friedholm
